The thing I find bad in games is when a cutscene is just too shocking. Especially the ones in call of duty, I just felt like they went over the line with some of them and that shouldn't be necessary. So I think that developers should stop making it so gruesome.

As for violence in general in video games (like shooting, fighting or making a rampage in GTA) I don't think it has that much of an effect on people. Which is weird now I think about it, because things get pretty violent but I guess whenever I play I always know in the back of my head that it's all fake... I don't really know about this, I have to give it a bit more thought.

Don't want kids to play violent video games, don't buy them.
Period.

Discussion done.
The people aren't worried about their kids playing. They are worried about the next rampage shooter being inspired by 'No Russian' and acting on it.

This isn't about parenting.

No Russian gives you the option to skip.

Prove to me that people are acting based on levels in a game, and then we'll have a discussion.

The people say that kids grow into violent grown ups based off of violent video games. So this is about kids.

I don't have to prove it to you, derp.

We have to prove that they aren't harmful to the angry parents that want to burn our games.

Whay is this so hard to see? You act like I am the one arguing against violent games. I'm not. But there is a very vocal minority that is being listened to right now, and if they get their way, we would be in possession of the last generation of violent games made.

If there is no proof to back it up, then what's the point in burning something simply because of an idea? Games aren't religious books.

The proof that they aren't harmful is the fact that we can't prove that they are harmful. It's proof enough, anyways.

This isn't hard to see.

How am I acting like you're arguing against it? I'm defending my point.
OK. Listen.

The point is not how to prove to me that the games aren't harmful, but how to prove to every pissed off soccer mom that wants to ban violent video games that they are wrong.

Its simple. I am pointing to a group of people that want to burn what we hold dear. If we don't address them, eventually they will get their way.

I am asking how best to address them. My opinion is irrelevant.

I find it hilarious that many of these same people so opposed to these movements to ban violent games also support the movement to ban firearms. Neither of them are responsible for these tragedies. Crazy and/or stupid people are responsible.

A couple of years ago someone got run-down near my school.

Why is there no ban on all cars?

The same reason people want to ban guns and violent games: stupidity and ignorance. There are more deaths in car accidents every year, but no one has anything bad to say about cars. There are roughly 9,000 deaths related to guns in the US each year, but there are over 260 million guns in the US. It all comes back to people. Crazy and stupid people are going to do crazy and stupid things. People blaming inanimate objects are just morons looking to push their agenda by making something or someone their scapegoat.

Well.... we could claim first amendment.
Do you really think that is applicable?

I don't think so haha. There's not really a strong argument to keep violent video games.
Yes, there is. Video games are a form of expression, and the first amendment protects freedom of expression.

Didn't the supreme court say that violent video games(and video games in general) are protected under the 1st amendment? If so there's not much they can really do against them, well in the US at least.

There's nothing wrong in violent video games. It's not the video games' fault that people are shooting little children in the face. The person responsible should be held accountable and not put it all down to some -blam!- vidoegames that most people play without breaking the law in some fashion or other. I mean seriously, these people need to get themselves a life or at least stop pretending that they have one...

Exactly.

A video game is meant to be what it is. A video game.

Everybody claims that kids get desensitized by them, when it's up to the grown ups to buy the game for the kids in the first place.
While I agree with you, what will this do to stem the tide of pissed off soccer moms looking to overturn Brown?

You guys don't seem to see the problem here.

LOL. I think you're wrong. You can't say that parents are buying the game for their kids and then say that the same parents don't want their kids to play it. Then they just wouldn't have bought it for their kids in the first place, silly. They're not even as realistic as some movies. Seriously. Movies are far more gory than games. I seen 12+ films where people have their heads chopped off...

Yes. In Brown.

SS cases DO get overturned. If they want to take the games out, that's where they will start. Its the same plan the anti-abortion people have with Roe.

Don't get me wrong here, I just defended myself by taking out your earlier arguments.

The fact of the matter is that Soccer Moms won't cause a dent.

A mom is a person with a child. If they are getting mad because their kids are playing 'bad' games, then it's their fault, obviously.

If people stuck to the rating system, then their idea of kids bringing weapons to school because of a game will be shut down.

When Obama puts in 2 more judges, expect a lot of things to be changed.

I think this kind of ruling did occur at the supreme court, but they will overturn it, and will ban all video games in general because it could have been an inspiration to a shooter.

My god. Maybe we deserve to have the games banned, just as an objective lesson on how the system works.

Yes, there is. Video games are a form of expression, and the first amendment protects freedom of expression.

People would just say that killing people isn't freedom of expression as much as it is pure violence. I don't really know what you're expressing when you go on a rampage killing thousands of computer generated people. Now I don't want those people to have their way at all, but you've just got to see this in a rational light and see it from their perspective.

The reason why it's so hard for people to ban guns (besides from the second amendment) is because guns can actually have a use. You can hunt with them, shoot targets (clay pigeons etc), defend yourself, and a lot of other things. There are strong arguments to keep them. With video games, there is no use for them other than entertainment. Video games don't do anything for you. That's a fact. There's really no strong argument to keep them, because video games aren't essential to anyone.

Interactivity.

True.

The only thing that stops them from banning the games outright is Brown. You can bet, if this movement gets enough power, they will try to overturn it.

The argument will be bad science and made up facts vs our right to play 'No Russian.' How do you think that will play out in the media?

Deport them

  • 01.03.2013 12:04 PM PDT

I continue doing what I've been doing. Talk to people that are willing to listen and explain to them that the violence isn't what makes games compelling. Maybe I'll start going to people and not waiting for them to come to me anymore.

Manhunt comes to mind as a game that was violent for the sake of it and nobody wanted anything to do with it. So that's a good example to bring up.
