Well.... we could claim first amendment.
Do you really think that is applicable?

It would work.

Well, we could start by responding calmly, rationally, and maturely. That way, we can take the wind out of the sails of the people who say that gamers are impulsive and immature.

Mike, you are the first person to actually respond to what I asked, and not what you assumed incorrectly I asked.

Thank you.

To the point, what would we say rationally? When your folks ask you about Saints Row, what do you say?

I think that parents with kids under 17 should not be able to buy M rated video games. When I worked at Gamestop, I had to deal with so many spoiled kids demanding their parents for a video game they wanted.

ESRB is there for a reason. Parents need to read that.

Also, if it does become a movement, internet cafes will be this time's speakeasies.
So parents with kids under 17 can't play Halo, CoD, Borderlands, etc?

Are you out of your mind?

He said BUY, not PLAY.

But if you don't buy it...how are you supposed to be able to play it?

Agreed. All the changes are good and add variety. Do we really want another Halo 3? Just running around with one gun and no armor abilities? It's good that 343 wants to try something new. Do we really want the same thing for three more games?

The reasoning for video games being the cause of shootings across the U.S. is flimsy and almost non-existent. Little to no extensive studies have been done on the matter.

Other forms of media include violence, yet those aren't necessarily thought of as "shooting-inducing" material.

To be honest, it really seems like they have no evidence or actual, rational reasoning for targeting games.

I'll probably start being a really, bad, bad person towards anyone who would support such a movement.

You still didn't answer the question.

But this is besides the point. Punishing gamers for loose gun laws and irresponsible parenting is ridiculous.

The problem I feel is that there really is no collective community for "gamers" that has the potential to be taken seriously.

Personally, I feel as if the logical explanation could go a long way in helping the case if there was some sort of a group that could garner respect and attention.

OK, there is a suggestion. Form a coalition of gamers to oppose the pissed off soccer moms. The gun owners have the NRA, who do we have?

Good job. This is exactly what I am looking for.

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

Good topic, but I'm content. Nothing's going to happen in the near future. Video games and vulgar music survived the culture crusades of the '80s and '90s, and given the ESRB rating on games, I think we're good for a while now.

But I guess that should be our rational response. If your child is playing a game you don't think they should be playing, what is it rated and why did you buy it for them? Or if it was a gift, why did you not first inspect the rating before allowing your child to play it? The game industry has filled its responsibility to inform parents and other purchasers of game content. The onus now lies on parents to ensure their kids consume only the media that the parents approve of.

When you post something on the internet, you have to mean what you say, because most times you can't tell what they originally meant. If the author of the post I replied to would like to clear things up, or confirm that that is what he actually believes, he should go ahead and do so.

It doesn't matter how I, or anyone here classifies violent games.

What does matter is how Joe Politician and Suzy the Soccer Mom defines that.

What's important is how we respond when asked to justify GTA or Call of Duty.

  • 01.03.2013 1:08 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Is there anything we as gamers, or the devs and publishers, could do to stop this before it grows legs into a real political movement?
Violence.

I graduated from high school on June-11-2011. I'm 19 right now. I'm turning 20 in December. I like playing video games, and board games. I like reading Sci-Fi, and World War II novels, and what not.

Here's my response:

If video games are the cause of gun violence, why does Japan, the creator of games like Street Fighter and Resident Evil, have 2 gun murders a year, as opposed to our 12,000?

There should only be emotions about the non-exist connection between CoD and murder.
