He who wishes for peace must first prepare for war.

Which era of warfare would you say was, or is, the most frightening for troops?

I say the ancient era, when you stood in line against angry men covered with blood and charging you, yelling to the tops of their lungs. I can't imagine being a spearman, fighting in a phalanx, preparing myself for a charging enemy.

I would say the future era... warfare can be had for no reason, and everything is subject to deception.

This day and age. I mean, with snipers that can soot accurately over a mile and a half, You might not even know what killed you or your best friend standing right next to you. Plus with things like hydrogen bombs, WMDs, stealth jets, and advanced tanks that we have today, the sheer firepower is terrifying.

If you're in a phalanx, hope the other side starts running first.

Push of the pike.

They all seem pretty terrible. WWI kind of sucked.

I <3 Halo:Reach - amazingly fun and best campaign + amazing Soundtrack
I <3 Halo 3:ODST - best soundtrack + Firefight + Coastal Highway and Mombassa Streets, amazingly unique campaign.
I <3 Halo 3 - best multiplayer levels + Forge + best Custom Games + soundtrack
I <3 Halo 2 - amazing huge fun campaign + soundtrack + Fun multiplayer
I <3 Halo: CE - started it all

I would assume every kind of active warfare is terrifying.

But I would go with the OP, Having huge clans clash at eachother, and knoiwng you were about to play into someone with a spear. Ouch.

WWI.

The fighting was still old style, but with modern technology. That's why so many died. Calvary charges into artillery and machine guns normally don't end well.

Probably WWI. Getting killed with Chlorine gas isn't very fun.

WWII for beach combat.

Imagine being at the front of a boat on shore. You know for a fact that when the door opens, a Machine Gun will devour your body in a flurry of bullets.

It was also probably quite frightening for the defensive forces. Visualize hiding in a little bunker, witnessing the horizon being blotted out by giant steel monsters, and hundreds upon hundreds of men storming your position and ready to end your life. It would be nerve wracking to try and cut down all those troops and see that many are slowly starting to break through.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

I would say WWI. Stuck in muddy treches with snipers and machine guns firing at anyone who popped their head up.

However, modern weapons and technology would be much deadlier on a grand scale.

Yeah, snipers are very frightening to fight against. Have you ever seen Enemy At The Gates? Russia ftw.

WWI. Imagine climbing out of your mud and -blam!- filled trench to sprint into machine gun fire to take their mud and -blam!- filled trench.

The current one, where an American sat in a base 10000 miles away can fire a missile at you because you look like a bad guy in a low resolution image shot.

You tell me what is scarier, fighting people with the same technology as you, or being dropped from space in a small metal box, and coming out to fight aliens with god knows what weapons they have?

Only on the western front (British and French vs Germans) But I agree, have you heard about the Battle of verdun?

That would definitely be one of the worst ones to fight in, Vietnam coming in second I would think.
