Frodo: "I can't do this, Sam."
Sam: "I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something."
Frodo: "What are we holding onto, Sam?"
Sam: "That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for."

Have read the books, but not since I was around 13 years old...Don't remember quotes from the book compared to the movies. And either way, that quote is awesome as Isengard is destroyed and Helm's Deep is won.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

Sometimes starting back from square one does good...

Ask smart questions
http://catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Hurray for an old man that didn't even want to license a movie as long as he lived and yet most people know about him via movies that probably ruined all the writing effort that he invested in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

The movies were nice though.

  • 01.03.2013 1:06 PM PDT

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

"No man can kill me."

"I am no man!"

Thank the lord he didn't want it, who knows what garbage it could have ended up becoming at the time.

Actually there was an animated version of the hobbit and the LoTR, in the late 70's and early 80's. Just before Tolkien died.
