I thought this would be about AI allies...

AI allies are included in this as well.

Halo Marines have been useless since, well, forever.

Got a better idea than that. Why don't we just let actual humans control the bad guys?
You mean multiplayer?

More like what we thought Firefight Versus would be. And more like what GOW: Judgement Overrun mode is shaping up to be.

Personally I'm wondering if they'll ever include a Competitive Campaign option. You and/or up to three of your friends play through the Campaign while the rest play as various enemy units during the game. If you die, you respawn by taking control of another unit currently spawned in the game.

Never.

A) its too difficult to encode for all of the "what if" situations possible in every given scenario

B) the enemies would be far too difficult to fight, and the game would lose its "fun" factor.
Nice pessimism there.

At the time? Given the technology? Probably is true.

Right now we have computers that can generate near photo-realistic images yet we have retards who pilot said images for us to shoot at.

I want AI I can talk to. Play with and against.. So I never have to play with REAL people! :P. Offline players will be finally satisfied this way.. and thus rid us of Xbox Live Subs xD.. Although I do have Xbox Live.

I'd say that with a more improved xbox, (the new one coming out in a year or so.) It could be entirely possible, but developing intelligent AI takes an extreme amount of time. I'd for one rather have balanced MP, and semi-intelligent AI. Although the AI do need improvement, it is easier said than done.

Of course we should take this with a grain of salt, but everything I've read about the 8th gen Xbox says that they will have the processing power to greatly improve AI.

That just means that the intensity needs to be lowered and that flanking enemies need to allow time for the player to spot them on the MT, or deal low damage so that players can deal with them.
I've seen Halo 2 Elites sneak up on me and do nothing until I turned to face them. This was in the bomb room on Cairo Station. I had all the skulls on. Armory seems to have made them much better than just running and gunning though I think it happens even on regular Legendary.

This is in stark contrast to the Stealth Elites who also possess a high RoF yet tend to stand in place firing for long times.

I think Spartan Ops doesn't work properly because of the high damage. In CE, it's actually enjoyable to be rushed by 20+ enemies at a time because it's not so severe. Just look at this massive chain reaction. It's glorious!

Except when they don't have any scripting/their scripting is impeded.

Infinity
Composer

Also, except Halo 2 marines.

Honestly, if the marines weren't driving around in vehicles, they'd be so much more better because you could position them anywhere you want. In CE, you could do this with pretty much any vehicle. In Halo 2, they had to be outside of their driving load zone. In Halo 4, the only vehicle they cannot drive is the Wraith.

Never. You can never achieve it simply because it will always be a program.

Yep. Best First Person Shooter campaign ever, and the AI have a large part to play in that

Oh hang on I'll just decode the miracle of human neurology and hammer it into C++.

Missing the point.

At the very least, we can program guards to be more attentive and to upgrade their behavior from passive to aggressive once we've made a kill in the area.

You expect that to happen.

FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR

Seriously, it's doable if the devs are good.

Oh good times. In one scenario I was killed by only two of them. The first spotted me, through down a soda machine for cover and sprayed me with suppressing fire. His teammate jumped through the window of a complex and rushed me with a shotgun and killed me. Fun AI to fight.

I countered it next time with a bouncing betty outside the window so when (and if) his teammate jumped through the window it'd get him. Well, he came out of the roll only to have a mine blow up in his face... I found his head in the next room on a table. The game had awesome physics and brutal gore.

I think you're forgetting that we are talking about AI in first person shooters. The strength of your AI opponents must be limited by the capabillities of the player to fight against them, and in a first person shooter, there are a ton of limitations.

Whereas in real life it's easy to whip your head (and weapon) around to face sudden threats at the drop of a hat, in a first person shooter, things are a lot more methodical and plodding, and as a result the enemies have to me methodical and plodding so that you can keep up with them.

thought the same thing mate that how it is innit

Talking about Sweden is an ultrabannable offense.

Posted by: Achronos
Too bad being completely and utterly wrong isn't a bannable offense.

The AI in Half Life 2 are actually pretty good. The poor level design and the fact that they all apparently went to the Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy wasn't...

Also, remember in Halo 3 when you killed one Hunter the other Hunter would beserk and charge you? I miss that. Same with brutes, grunts and elites.

The AI in Wargame: European Escalation is hard. They will flank you with tanks, draw fire with faster, lighter and cheaper vehicles, form tank firebases with superior altitude and firepower, and do full on Soviet tank charges with rocket artillery and heli support.

Also, there was an update to multiplayer servers in Arma 2 which stopped the server calculating player positions and actions, freeing up that space for AI calculations. The results are scary.

AI is good, just not in the right games.

Why can't Promethean Knights be like that?

They have a Suppressor, they have an aggressive variant with a shotgun. But they're almost always fought in open terrain with little destructible elements.

Looks like the issue is also level design. A lot of levels are too open (Forerunner, Midnight).

I visited some topics about F.E.A.R and I was pleasantly surprised to see the AI being discussed. I rarely see that with Halo. There was a lot of enthusiasm before Halo 4 but now it's rarely brought up.

Too bad it was too slow to present a threat. Likewise, the Brutes. Halo 3 Brutes get looked down on a lot but if they were faster in their berserk mode, they'd be a threat.

I think CE Zealots are a good model for charging. They start off slow but they catch up to you very quickly. CE Hunters were also decent, they could keep up with you from the get-go. They merely lacked an unique ability and different melee animations, both of which the Zealot had.

There just aren't enough moments in the day to rectify the wrongs of the past.

You should play a Splinter Cell game OP, namely Conviction. The AI can be ridiculous in that when they have you spotted, and if you dont think it's difficult, then we are not at the age which you want.

I thought the Forerunners did pretty good. Knights disappearing behind our lines, Watchers shielding, protecting, and reviving fallen ones. Crawlers always being the courageous and the first to run into battle.

Whoo.

Making smart fun unbuggy AI is difficult to say the least as well as something that has very limited curb appeal.

Things like art style, graphics, story, immediately apparent dynamic gameplay, that'll get the audience. AI can generally be limited by predictable movements and actions because that's what people expect.
