Desktops can be left on if they're well ventilated and on surge protectors. Mine is never shut down unless I want to sleep without the noise.

On the other hand, laptops are more likely to overheat so they should be powered off or put in hibernation/sleep mode more often. Also, they shouldn't always be on the charger as it drains the battery.

Just basic computer 101

All day, then I put it in sleep mode until the next day. My other computer stays on permanently since it's running a server.

My iPhone is the more interesting case. I bought it in July 2008 and haven't turned it off for more than about 30 seconds to reset it.

I turn it on when I wake up.
I turn it off when I go to bed.
Anywhere between that I have it set to sleep when I'm away from it.

It's always on. I only put it on Stand-by when I'm not using it. I do turn it off if I'm going to be out most of the day though.

I usually turn it off at 2-6 in the morning, then on again when I wake up at 11.

I agree that all presidents should serve 2 terms. 1 in office and 1 in prison

I shut my laptop and let it sleep.

Usually weeks at a time. I turn it off for updates.

GOAT

Laptop user here.

I never shut it off, only close it. The last time I shut it off was a week or so ago, when the desktop froze.

NON FACET NOBIS CALCITRARE VESTRUM PERNǢUM

Usually I shut it down after I done with it for the night. Turn it back on when I get to work, so it's running about 18 hours a day.

Same here, I keep mine on 24 hours a day. Makes me glad they made the Do Not Disturb setting for it

It's so disgustingly wasteful to leave your computer on while not in use. Not only are you needlessly using finite energy, you're also hurting the hardware.

My computer is only on for ~5 hours a day - and I'm actively using it the entire time.

iPhone 4S 64GB Black.

I keep it on sleep/hibernation 24/7. I cannot deal with Windows' slow loading times. It takes like a few minutes to start up a Windows 7 laptop.

Work computer is always on constantly - just in case I need to log on remotely.

It gets restarted like every two months for updates and that is it.

I don't have a PC except for my laptop and that goes off when I'm finished with using it.

Huh. My Windows 7 Gateway laptop takes less than 10 seconds.

Laptop: Forever unless I reboot for an update.

Desktop: Forever unless I reboot for an update.

Why would you ever shut them down?

Now let's get down to business, I don't got no time to play around, what is this?

I'm surprised by how many people don't turn them off. I turn mine on early afternoon when I first come online, and then leave it on for the rest of the day until I go to sleep.

To conserve energy?

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I normally keep it on all week except for the weekends.
I should probably change that.

  • 01.04.2013 8:09 AM PDT

hmm

Pretty much leave it on all the time.

To conserve energy?
Turn your thermostat down 2 degrees (C) and you'll save more energy in a day than your computer would use in weeks of idle.

That doesn't change the fact that turning the system off conserves more energy than leaving it on, no matter how minimal the difference.

I only turn mine off if I'm gone for more than say a day, most of the time I just put it in sleep mode.

If this craptop doesn't get turned off, I'd be afraid of it leaking radiation.

  • 01.04.2013 8:57 AM PDT

Turn it off at the end of the day.

Or, if I know I won't use it for at least 4 hours.
