Guys, chill out. This wasn't meant for you guys to vent your anger about being banned. It was just me asking a question. Obviously some of you haven't read any of recon's posts. He's obviously fed up with everyone looking for a scapegoat. As unfair as some of us think it is, what can we do? That's there job and they go by bungie's rules.

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head, The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls, the number of dead's the rising of the horns, ahead
From the dawn of time to the end of days I will have to run, away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste of the blood on my lips, again

I thought if this analogy for carpet bans a few days ago (I know it's not entirely accurate but bear with me.)

Die Hard With a Vengeance. Remember when Bruce Willis was on the street corner, about to get killed for wearing the sign and Sam Jackson comes over and warns him what's gonna happen if he doesn't get the hell out of there? That's how I feel about people who post in political/religion/other threads warning the OP and get banned. They don't deserve it, they were just trying to be a good samaritan. Same Jackson got cut in the process because he was trying to save his life. You could watch as the black men (mods) kill (ban) him, or you could give him advice that might save his life (posting privileges.)

Also think about this, would you really go through 5 pages of posts to go through the steps to find and ban the right people. As lazy as it may sound, it's not worth it.

But then again, I'm biased because I haven't been caught up in a carpet ban

Key

Why not PM somebody if you're actually trying to be helpful and not trying to be a public forum cop and look kewl? I have no problem with public forum copping, but don't get pissed when you get banned for posting in a spam thread, even if you're forum copping.

e: also, "Carpet Ban" makes it seem random and reactionary. I dislike the term

This is exactly what a user should do. If you see a thread that is breaking the rules, and for some reason feel it is your job to tell them this, then just PM them, because posting in the thread is the wrong thing to do.

You shouldn't. You didn't know something, so you asked a question. It got answered (by various members from various perspectives). It also encouraged some discussion as to whether a uniform short term ban to a couple of dozen members who are all breaking rules past a particular point and to various levels beyond, that all of them get a uniform time out and smack to the back of the head.

I didn't care about content, intent, history, or the color of their bar. I was even-handed and (as some have attested who have seen 14 day (or longer) blanket bans, I was actually kind of nice about it.

So you've done what this forum is for, you didn't know, you asked a question and you got a lot of perspective and answers from members who each have their own views on the matter.

You're not likely to "get into trouble for this", you've helped educate fellow members. This is why we have this community forum, to better explain and discuss these things.

I just said that cause if I recall I've gotten a warning for my threads getting derailed. I don't know, I was just playing it safe. But this is true, I didn't know and now I do

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Reading this thread(mostly recon's posts) My mind has been opened a little more. I agree with recon's decision. I'm sure that the members banned will think twice before contributing to a thread that is clearly against the rules. This is a learning experience and an example to all.

Much deeper.

Bad visuals, man, bad visuals.

By posting they are promoting discussion because it bumps the thread.

I don't like carpet bans but I understand why they do it.

I thought the visuals were kind of humorous.

Okay,I laughed a little.

Calculus calms my troubled mind

I agree that people bumping threads after they have turned into a problem should be banned, but what about the people who posted before they? Are they banned also?

[REDACTED]. Also lets say you have a member who was here for a short time yet he has had no warnings or bans and as far as you can tell he has been a productive member to the community.

Do you let him off with a warning if his discussion was civil and he simply was unaware of the rule or do you ban him possibly angering him to the point he does not return to the community?

For me, it really depends on what the subject is and/or what people are posting.

If the subject is light and minimal, I may let it slide. If the subject had no business being on here in the first place, I slap everyone in the face.

Sometimes a topic is fine and dandy but some users decide to either take it completely off topic or spam it to hell. I ban for that, too.

It really is a case-by-case basis though.

Eh, the members who post in t he thread should know better. If it's a risky topic then 'report and move on'.

If I am not posting, then I am reading what you might have posted.

It is fair, even if the user is trying to help they are not doing it the right way, you don't post in a thread telling the OP that he/she is getting banned you are bumping the thread, then more people will bump the thread.

Bumptacular!

  • 01.03.2013 11:53 PM PDT

Who am I?

mah twitter

Pushing the report button is the only real way you can try to stop the discussion. bumping the thread won't really help.

And seems that the blanket ban people here are talking about is a pretty clear case, since it's very clearly political.

"You have no rights" is the most important rule here, don't forget that.
