I just wanted to make it clear that the way you moderated that thread was unfair to many respectable and honest members.

You haven't heard a thing that I've said.

Any member in the thread lost their claims of respectability or honesty.

Take your 3 day is wise, because I was going to hammer the account if you had PM'ed me from it. Just like I am going to permabann this account of yours for blatant ban evasion.

Yeah, you're a model to everyone. You think that the rules should be altered for you because it's you.
Dude, that's not his alt, that's most likely a Rose alt trying to get him permabanned. The real MadMax888 is crafting you a message right now.

Why is it called a carpet ban?

I think it's related to carpet bombing, but I could be wrong.
No you're right, same principal.

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Trying to stop the discussion lifts the thread to the top of the forum board with your post, making more posts likely to be added.

That is in fact making more people post; the opposite of what you want.

People who post "report and move on" should follow their own advice.

People posting warnings about a thread shouldn't be punished, because, no, they are not "contributing" to the discussion whatsoever. It's obvious that if someone posts "Report and move on," that they are doing what they can to lessen the number of bans that could possibly take place. So realistically, banning someone for that reason is banning someone for attempting to better the forums.

The delusion that someone who was going to post in that thread will read your post and think "Y'know what.... I really should report and move on. Thanks Winy Pit! I will no longer make a post in this thread!"

People will not listen to you. They are not eight-year-olds, you are not a parent or teacher, and they sure as hell aren't as malleably minded as you seem to think they are. Your post is literally spam at that point. In fact, it does two things, neither of which is good.

1. Bumps a rule-breaking thread.

2. Opens the door for an endless amount of quote-posts of your post.

So once again, stop laboring under the delusion that anyone will actually change their mind when they read your post about reporting and moving on. Though your intentions may be good, when you actually stop and take a moment to think about it, your post makes no sense and does no good.

You know not to bump it so why do it?
Making a sacrifice to save someone else from losing their title. I'm thankful for these people, sometimes I become forgetful of the rules or I succumb to temptations and I'll want to post in a thread, but then these people remind me not to post in the thread, and I'm thankful for them, saved me more than once.

The world is full of mysteries, and shares too few of the answers required. An example of which, is how did I end up in the Brute Zone?

Which thread are we referring to?

  • 01.04.2013 5:32 AM PDT

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

It isn't exactly fair, but the user should know better than to bump a rule breaking thread.

:-)

For me, it really depends on what the subject is and/or what people are posting.

If the subject is light and minimal, I may let it slide. If the subject had no business being on here in the first place, I slap everyone in the face.

Sometimes a topic is fine and dandy but some users decide to either take it completely off topic or spam it to hell. I ban for that, too.

It really is a case-by-case basis though.

I remember getting a 12 day ban from yourself once last year, I made a thread questioning a joke people were making related to a sensitive subject. In hindsight, it was probably best leaving the joke and letting it go, so I got banned, learned my lesson and moved on.

I'm not keen on carpet bans per se, as some people don't know what they are getting themselves into, but unfortunately for some, the moderating on this website is very stern, and second chances are few. We all learn the hard way, and I'm still working on trying to earn back Exalted status like the people who were banned earlier.

The funny thing is, that wasn't his (MadMax888) alt that posted in here. It was someone else who has an alt called MadMax838 who posted in here and got MadMax888 a permanent ban.

It's a pretty elaborate scheme.

No. You are reading wrong.

He was going to permaban the main account for making an alt to post on here about how rules don't apply to him, thus circumnavigating his ban and the terms of agreement when you sign up to use this site.

Yessir, no problem.

While I agree with carpet bans, I just hope I'm never caught up in one because I'd be sorely disappointed in myself for not realizing I am posting in a carpet bannable thread.

On numerous occasions I've observed rule breaking threads contain a quick "report and move on," and then there are very few posts following it. So clearly, in some cases, while not all, it is a decently effective way of reminding people "Hey, don't respond, the OP is a troll," or "Hey, don't respond, the OP breaks the rules." It is absolutely ridiculous to ban people for even attempting to warn other users.
