Chapter

I have been discussing immortality with family and friends lately, I'm not sure why but it's been a hot topic among us. Anywho, I'll get to my point. I believe that if immortality were to be achieved, it would be the end of the human race. It would be the ultimate irony. So, here is my theory.

Immortality would not be the end of our race by means of war or disease, but by evolution of the human body. Think about it for a second. When our bodies feel they do or do not need something anymore, they either compensate for something they need or they stop providing us with something that is no longer needed. The best example would be a man using steroids. When a man uses steroids, his body eventually stops
producing testosterone because it senses that he is providing it for himself.

I believe that immortality would cause an evolution in our species that would ultimately cause the extinction of the human race. I think this because I feel that if we were to become immortal our bodies' reprodcution functions would cease to exist. Reproduction is a vital evoultionary trait and natural response to death that allows us to remain in existence. I feel that our body would no longer sense the need to reproduce because people no longer die and therefore there is would be no need for the body to reproduce in order to continue the human race.

/rant. Discuss my theory.

Immortality is self-sustaining

They would have already thought about this.

The main reason why Immortality wouldn't work is that time goes faster the longer you live. Not literally but through experience.

Let's say you were 1 year old - 1 year is 100% of your life.

If you were 100, 1 year is 1% of your life. At 100 years old, time is going 100 times faster than if you were 1 year old

If you were a thousand years old, you can imagine how crazy that would make someone, not to mention the probable severe dementia

1) Immortality will never be realistic. Being unable to age is possible, but everyone will still be vulnerable to every other form of death.

2) Just because we cannot die, does not mean we will not feel the urge to reproduce. It is ingrained into our instincts. Therefore, the only way to remove that from our system would be to breed the lack of desire to breed. It is an impossibility.

Yeah so whenever you think to yourself about how time is going faster, it pretty much is

and it's pretty scary

  • 01.04.2013 1:17 AM PDT

So you assume people will just stop wanting to have sex?

Not really. What actually happens is that as you get older, you begin to process information differently. A three year old processes all the information it can, while a 20 year old processes only the most important items. This provides the "illusion" that time travels extremely fast, but in reality, you just don't remember all the details.

This process is generally optimized by the end of your brains "development" stage, which is about 25. It is also affected by mental disorders, such as Alzheimers.

Long story short: If you are forever young, the healthy will be perfectly fine.

So you assume people will just stop wanting to have sex?

No, I'm sure we will always want to. I'm saying that I think that our bodies would just stop giving us the ablilty to reproduce. Men wouldn't be able to make women pregnant through sex.

There is no logical reason for that to occur.

It was only a theory. I said that it wouldn't feel the need to reproduce because if you're immortal you no longer have the need to carry on your genes.

If we disagree, it's nothing personal, opinions are opinions.
Antagonizing me to build a false sense of worth is so damn cute.

Yes, but we have an emotional one. Evolution takes all of the variables in, just because there is no physical necessity does not mean we will not have the need or desire to do it.

If we reached an age where we cracked the gene for immortality, then Im sure we could too alter our genes to fit a niche.

It will likely be achieved through nano-technology well before direct embryonic gene alteration.

Same. I hated English class until I got to grade 11 and discovered that, along with a teacher who fueled my passion, I was actually a fantastic writer. I credit this forum for that.

Three and a half years later, I'm struggling in Programming school (BCIT, Computer Systems Technology) and being advised by all my fellow students to become a lawyer or a journalist.

If we had reached an age where we could program nano bots that sophisticated, then altering genes wouldnt be a stretch considering we can do it now.

<(-_-)> Teh mokey is not amused

Humans become unable to reproduce after I think 50ish anyway, but there's no reason the body of younger people would cease to produce reproductive organs since the preservation of ones own body and reproduction are completely different to your subconscious.

This has to do with how we view things in the past, not with how things are experienced in the present. The years seem to get shorter because there is always more past happening, but your present experience always stays the same.
