I've been playing it lately and not finding it anywhere near as good as people said it was

But I played it after Metroid Fusion, Metroid Prime and Symphony of the Night. Did I ruin my perception of it by playing it after all of those? I'm sure it was good for its time

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

It's not overrated

The game is old

It was amazing at the time

You can't judge a game of back then by today's standards.

That's basically what I said in my post. I'm not judging it by today's standards

But other people seem to go on about how much better it is than the other games I mentioned

Some things in this World you just can't explain; but that doesn't mean they are any less true, just that you have to chose to believe in them.

Well here's the thing.. Some people like a game and others don't like it as much.

Think about the people who say Halo 4 is amazing and one of the best games they've played. That's not true for every one.

Maybe it's just not your style of game or isn't as entertaining as it is for others.

I guess. I like this game but I don't think it's on par with the later Metroid and Metroidvania games

The thing is, Super Metroid laid the groundwork for all of those games. You wouldn't have "Metroidvania" without Super Metroid. Judging the game on level ground, I'd say it's not the best Metroid game (although still a great game). Then again, I wasn't personally blown away by the Prime games, but I did think they were solid.

What has a Castlevania game got to do with Super Metroid?

Many of the Castlevanias from Symphony of the Night and onward are essentially a hybrid of Castlevania IV and Metroid, hence the term "Metroidvania".

Guess that proves tsujen right then. And I'd say it was Metroid and Metroid II that did more than Super Metroid for that though SM also added things

Same gameplay style and I've seen a lot of comparisons between the two

I definitely couldn't say that's inaccurate that the original Metroid was the true progenitor, but Super Metroid, as you said, did make important additions. I have yet to play Metroid II, but it did introduce things as well.

Wow, okay then. I did not know that. I haven't played any Metroid games, and only played SOTN as a kid on the PS1, so you had me confused for a minute there...

I can definitely understand your confusion, then. Give them a try, you might like them. Zero Mission would be a good starting point, as it's a remake of the first game, which is chronologically the first. I don't want to be that guy, but you can get a ROM and VBA if you don't own a GBA. Fusion is also an awesome GBA game, but it's quite a bit tougher than Zero Mission.

Wait, I thought it said Super Mario...

...never mind.

@spaboolly

Somewhat relevant article that looks at classic games both from how they were received in their time and the impact they've had.

Both Super Metroid and SOTN are mentioned, as is their relationship.

Basically, I think Super Metroid is a pretty solid platformer. It was revolutionary in its own way, and had a huge impact on the action/adventure platformer genre in the years after is release. I think some old games are still just as fun as modern ones anyway.
