Subject: Self driving cars coming in 5 years

Small to you maybe but it's a big one to me. Anyway the reason we have so many accidents is because of a -blam!- drivers education. We need to have stricter drivers ed, and harsher driving laws. We need to teach people that driving is a privilege not a right like most thing it is.
Aren't most driving accidents caused by impaired drivers, not just lack of knowledgeable?

Would practically kill uniqueness within the auto industry in respect to most car design elements.

Would be an extreme shock to the industry. And I don't know how the transition period would go when you have automated and non-automated cars on the road at the same time.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

I think the plan is to use the HOV lanes at first.

Well that's where the stricter laws and education would come into play. You text, or drink and drive, you have your licensed suspended for a good amount of time. You kill someone? Life time license ban. Also teaching would greatly help preventing this.

Automated vehicles would eliminate most of the deaths and allow you to text, drink, ect while at the wheel. There would be no need for license bans because, eventually, no one would die. I fail to see how your alternative is better.

Those systems can fail, wreck and the driver has no control over it. Plus as I asked before what controls these cars?

A computer controls them. And the chances of them failing are FAR less than the chances of a human failing, so I don't see the problem.

What if some one hacks this computer? How are you going to make everyone switch over to this.

GAAAAYYY

Why would you want a self driving car? Takes all the fun from driving.

The system could be closed so that nothing outside can control the computer, or something of the sort. And eventually, everyone will have to switch over because that's all that will be made.

The vast majority of problems anywhere in any industry even walking down the road is down to human error.

You trust a plane to fly you around the world only the pilot lands and take's off, which realistically can be done by the plane itself.

People could still buy used cars.

Eventually, there would be no affordable used cars (that aren't autonomous) to buy.

We already do this.

If we had automated cars, it wouldn't matter if the driver was drunk or texting at all, nor would it matter how they had been educated.

Watch Dogs. That is all.

OT: It's a very interesting concept. It'll probably be hard to implement though since a lot of people would like to drive on their own and modify their cars and such. Then again if automated cars are widely adopted there probably will be a decrease in car accidents.

Of course I am putting a great amount of faith in the programming of the cars here.

Driving isn't about fun, it's about getting from one place to another.

The fun is a small price to pay for fewer accidents, less fuel used, and reduced traffic issues.

Because they would all become antiques. Eventually, when autonomous cars are almost exclusively made, the old used cars would become collector's items. Think about how hard it is now to find a 1920's car. The government might even eventually require a special license to drive normal cars, which would deter even more people from doing it.

It actually defeats the point of it being a 'car' now lol.

Might as well strip the steering wheels and stuff and make it a capsule like vehicle you just step in and it drives you to your destination.

And that's probably what it will come to someday. How is this a bad thing?

It's going to have to be many many years for that to happen. There are so many cars out there the reason it's hard to fin a car from the 1920's is because not as many were made. There are millions of cars out there all different years that one could buy. Some are never going to be worth all that much. Plus there are going to be people like me who will never give up our cars. You're not going to get everyone in a automated car for many years.
