I still don't see why people complain about oil companies eeking out a couple cents profit per gallon of gas when the federal govermnent takes 18.4 cents per gallon, your state takes about 20 cents per gallon, and your local municipality takes about 10 cents per gallon in taxes.

It's mainly the perception.

Oil companies make billions in profit and get millions more in subsidies from the government. They are seemingly rich enough to do a line of -blam!- of the back of a hooker's -blam!- while on their million dollar yacht.

Meh, no denying they make billions. But most are quite massive - so billions in profit are actually pretty low profit margins all things considered. And the industry does directly support millions of jobs here in the US.

Not saying they are saints, but they definitely have gotten the short end of the PR stick. And it is mainly the publically traded ones that get raged on.

No one rages on Saudi Aramco and other nationalized oil companies - Saudi Aramco's value is estimated at over $8 trillion last I remember - the equivalent of like 20 Exxon Mobils.

And when they -blam!- up, they also have massive -blam!- ups.

Hi BP. Oh hey, Shell just crashed an oil rig onto a shore line.

Happens all the time. These people are compensated.
A problem arises, though, when a city takes someones property and sells it to a business.

You're telling me that in 57 counties "full of people" not one of them consulted a lawyer?

Eminent domain has existed well...forever. Also, not trying to sound like a dick, but she signed the contract.
Yep. It's her fault if she signs something without reading it.

Buyers remorse =/= being forced off your land.

(V)!_!(V) crab

I think she should dig up her money and run. If they want her land they will get it even if it means paying a couple million to "donate" to the governor.

Plus looking at how the whole fracking fiasco has gone with tainted water and people being threatened off their land It would be just eaiser to move.

No, but everyone does get freedom, for better or worse.

Scott's property has been deemed by TransCanada to be a "low consequence area," meaning that the company intends to use thinner pipeline steel across her land. How considerate of them. :-/

Usually about $10k per acre for easements - obviously easements mean they don't own the land, just have the right to put the pipe there. Future buyers of the land that is eased have to accept that easement.

Texas is about $300 an acre to buy - so solid deal for landowners who are lucky enough.

wut

Somewhere on the border between El Paso and Big Bend NP, maybe. Most desirable land in TX is well over $1k/acre, to include east TX where the pipeline is.

RIP Logan ~B.B.

US has had eminent domain for a long time. Often used when creating new highways or roads. Personally, I think it is an abuse when the government uses it on behalf of a private industry, though. If a private business wants something, they should have to pay fair market value, which, in this case, would be how much it costs to make the pipe circumvent the property.

It's her fault she got scammed by signing that contract. Seriously... does she even eminent domain?

I was talking in general for what you'd consider farm/pasture acreage in Texas, obviously prices vary and I'm sure you've seen appreciation in value in property, especially near announced pipelines on hopes of more pipeline running that way.

Either way, my point was that landowners are compensated fairly well for easements on their property - whether they bought that land for $100 an acre twenty years ago or $1,000 an acre five years ago.
