You can medicate some/all of your symptoms away, but the cold will be gone when your body is done fighting the infection.
The Day/Night packs of most OTC cold-medicine work reasonably well at getting rid of the clogged sinuses, aches, and so on. The cough though? That's trickier since nearly all of the OTC cough medicines aren't very effective. Other than keeping your throat moist and as soothed as possible, coughing is hard to control without a prescription.
Delsym 12-hour (which is an OTC cough-suppressant that's as "good" as any) in a suspension, has helped me out before.
Call me cheap, but Delsym is pricey as it is not the generic. Is Delsym just DXM?
It's Dextromethorphan in a polistirex suspension. If there is a store-brand (compare to) equivalent, I'd buy that. But wouldn't expect much, Dextromethorphan hasn't done well in effectiveness studies. But then, other than opiates, I am not sure of any OTC that has done well for cough suppression.
