No. It's all about the money, money, money...
Well... until someone else can offer a service that is par to Xbox LIVE- people will keep paying.
There are better alternatives. It's only for Xbox that you HAVE to buy Gold. It's either get it or no online play, which limits it greatly.
Compared to PS plus the benefits of Live are
Better chat options
Better party options
Now the benefits of PS+
Cheaper than live
Discounted downloads (if you download semi regularly the service can pay for itself)
3 or 4 games each month as part of the subscription. Ranging from indie games to triple A titles for both Vita, PS3, PSP, and PS1. Recently Gravity Rush and Uncharted Golden Abyss were added.
60 minutes full game trials
No annoying ads cluttered everywhere, cleaner interface.
New Free avatars and themes updated every few months.
It's a no brainer. And like others are saying for PC there is steam and it's awesomeness. But they know you will pay it because you pretty much have to, so they charge you. We shouldn't support a company like that, it's why I buy multiplatform games for PS3 now.
Not to mention people are being a bit blind here and not seeing all of the variables. Yes, providing online is a cost, but it does generate extra revenue and increase popularity and thus purchases of games.
