Every time a new Halo is announced I read people saying they don't want the Flood to be in it because they're either boring or too strong or whatever. I've always liked them; not as much as the Covenant, mind you, but I never found them to be uninteresting. I loved the Cortana level in H3, too.

Please don't forget to answer the poll's question besides leaving a more in-depth message if you so desire. I'd like to understand why some people don't like them.

The flood annoy the crap out of me and I dread having to play on a level that requires fighting them but yet I like them, I love the story behind them and I always want to see them in a Halo game. It's weird.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I liked them in Halo CE because they're genuinely scary in that and their AI isn't totally unbearable, but I don't like them in any of the other games.

Hopefully 343 can totally revamp the Flood when they return, since the Precursors are a conglomeration of races there should be lots of new and different forms. Some of the Halo Wars variants could make it in too, that'd be cool.

I also want to see the Flood at their most fearsome. One thing I did like about Halo 3 was how the environment WAS the Flood.

OMG
Master Chief w/o his Helmet!

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

I liked the Halo 1 flood. There was a rhythm to them, the way the carrier forms worked both with you and against you.

The Halo 2 flood were okay. Moderately stronger than 1, but the only way to put them down for good was to waste ammo or carry a sword. The inclusion of shields on Elite combat forms was interesting, but ultimately it didn't change much. The ability for precision weapons to get "headshots" by killing the infection form inside the combat form was a nice touch.
Unfortunately, there were hardly any carrier forms, and they didn't work like the did in 1. You hardly ever fought more than half a dozen combat forms at a time, so they lost the "swarm" feel as well.

The Halo 3 flood were too weak. I don't get why melee is suddenly the best thing instead of the worst either. The pure forms were okay, but I would have liked to see the "Juggernaut" that never made it into 2 instead.

I'd say make them more like Halo 1 (swarms), or go for something we haven't seen yet.

I liked fighting the Halo CE and Halo 2 Flood.

Halo 3 Flood were just so damn annoying.

I like the idea of the Flood, but they were implemented poorly in the games, particuarly Halo 3. I'd like to see what they can really be capable of--enemies that can create new forms to suit whatever they need to do at the time. Smart enemies on top of the zerg rush ones.

I am the Thorian, known as Species 37 to you people. I am an ancient sentient plant that is fifty thousand years old. My ability to hibernate for thousands of years makes my real age impossible to guess though you are welcome to try.

I still have nightmares about doing the level Cortana on Legendary...

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

I'll say one thing I didn't like about the Flood; their doors were compliant. What's up with that? I want to fight those doors, earm my right to pass!

Think of them to be less like doors, rather they're just a few of the Gravemind's many arseholes.

Thank you very much for that wonderful image. Does anyone have any mind-soap?

The things Chief had to do to rescue Cortana...

Unsuccessfully trying to bring science and reason to The Flood...

I liked them in H:CE but not since then.

I think the problem is that they have been overcomplicated. In H:CE they were kept very simple. 3 basic types, paced introduction to each, different but intuitive combat.

In more recent games they insist on adding extra features. Shields and vehicle driving in H2, and those horrible flood Tank things in H3 (the things that could change form). They simply weren't fun to play against.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Do I like fighting them in game? I'm fairly indifferent on the matter. They are a sufficiently challenging and diverse enemy, as far as gameplay goes.

If, however, you meant "Do I like them as a character?" then the answer is most certainly yes. I find the Flood, or more specifically the Gravemind, a deep, almost philosophical villain who reveals the dark side of humanity, which is conquest and domination and assimilation. Far more engaging and interesting than the Diadact ever was, or is ever likely to be.

What a waste....

Cortana on Legendary was the biggest abortion of a Campaign mission that ever existed.

CE: the best. No they weren't overpowered. You're in a Banshee, that makes a lot of noise, of course you're going to get shot down by a rocket on your next turn.

I admit, spamming rocket launcher wielders on bridges and in small rooms was overkill but they were still pretty manageable. I liked how they would recklessly blow up themselves or their allies up and fire up close when attacking me. Really damn fun. I also liked how Carrier Forms actually presented a threat. And who could forget making Flood buddies? :-)

H2: overpowered and unpleasant. Flood used to be snipers with the rocket launcher, now they can home in. Flood used to be overwhelming in numbers, now only a single combat form is enough to do that. In cqc, you have to be extremely careful. Don't lunge in with the sword recklessly. There's a pattern you have to learn. The ability to drive vehicles was a nice touch but I'd have liked to see Flood spores/build-up on them and some unique attributes gained from that. Oh and the Infection Forms are just terribly overpowered. They can easily kill you even on Easy. And you can only fight back by shooting because of the reduced melee range, which makes it less immersive.

H3: I guess it made sense that we could beatdown the Flood but their numbers were lacking (could have compensated for such an advantage on higher difficulties) and aggression was absent (infection forms lose their interest in raising the dead when there's enough combat forms). Not to mention they were nerfed as hell. I can beatdown Tank Forms with the Brute Shot or with 1 hit of the flamethrower.

The concept Pure Forms were great but the existing ones are lame.

On a narrative level, they're fantastic if a little unoriginal. In terms of gameplay, they're nothing special. I don't dislike fighting them, but they're not as fun to fight as the Covenant.

Same with the Prometheans.

I don't get the hate on the Flood either. They are a fun enemy to fight and the Halo trilogy wouldn't be the same without them.

The flood did something that no other character in the halo universe has done so far...they gave me a lasting impression of certain levels. Most of the levels I remember most featured the flood. Think the library, the two betrayals, and the maw. As soon as I mention those levels most of you immediately think of the unrelenting difficulty, the large scale battles of you vs. the covenant, vs. the flood vs. the sentinels. they added variety to the game and made it that much better.

This is pretty much my thought as well; they were new and scary in the original Halo but they quickly became "meh" when they began showing up in 2 and 3.

  • 01.05.2013 12:48 PM PDT

I hated them in Halo CE. Was just a little bit too much for me. Halo 3 went all Resident Evil with the Flood. I liked how the Flood in Halo 2 especially when they crashed into High Charity. Who saw that coming. The Flood are good enemies, maybe we've all just gotten tired of them. They just need a little bit more of variety if we are ever to see them again.
