Subject: Question about Music Theory course

Everything you know is wrong.

Would it be wise in taking Music Theory before taking a other music classes that involve histories of certain genres of music, for example Jazz?

All I am looking for is some insight.

Thanks!

You don't really need history of music to be able to do music theory.

I don't know if my question is worded in the wrong way, but I am asking if its better to take a music theory class first then a history of a genre, because I am taking a history class of Jazz and it isn't what I thought it was going to be. It's a lot more complicated than I thought and I have little knowledge with music theory.

There's a “U” and “I” in union but just an “I” in my beliefs

Why isn't your teaching helping you to understand?

Oh I get what you mean, does knowing about music theory benefit you in jazz history/etc.

I hate to be that guy but it really depends on your instructor. Generally though, most music history classes are orientated so that someone without an extensive music background is able to do well and understand the material.

Well, you really only need theory if you're a musician, so...

Stosh <3's me vicariously... at least someone does...

It depends on how the classes are structured, and as far as I know there isn't a universal methodology. Personally I found it easy enough to get through both types of classes without absorbing much. I only took that stuff as electives though, so if you're trying to major in it you might want to get the opinion of those teaching the programs.

Everything you know is wrong.

I am taking the class as an elective, if that helps.
