Damn shame Air Force wants to replace it.
With F-35s.

Which may constitute a substantial loss of firepower as the F-35's max load is less than that of an A-10.
A very significant drop in ordinance.

Why call it a warthog? I mean, it doesn't really look like a pig. It looks more like a big cat.
Like a puma?

The AFB my dad worked at had A-10s stationed. Whenever I went to visit him, I always watched them and the B-52s fly around the city. When I was in the second/third grade, my dad arranged for some A-10 pilots to talk to the cub scouts group I was in. We got to see the cockpit and some of the Warthog's armament closeup.

Remember, grammar is the difference between; "I helped my uncle Jack off a horse." And "I helped my uncle jack off a horse."
Hyperlinks, you know you want to click 'em

So awesome that it appears in the music video for Peace Sells, well for a few seconds anyway.

I hope we get to the point where we can retrofit some VTOLs on that bastard and just have it replace our helicopters.

The output from that GAU-8 would probably flip him over though.

F-35 has VTOL capability.

I guarantee you the warthog is not getting phased out...

That thing is a machine that deals dealth with double redundancy flight controls (two hydraulic, one mechanical), and can fly with one engine, one tail fin, and 30% of it's total wing span missing.

It can provide ground cover like no other air craft can. It's preposterous.

Oh, and with low pressure tires and raised engine nacelles, it can take off of dirt and other unimproved runways, making it ideal for worst-case-scenario air defense and support.

I mean, seriously, anything that can stall itself out if it fires for more than a second has to be worth keeping. Right?

Damn that's sweet.

I hope when I get blown apart that it's that thing that did it.

According to Wikipedia:

"The A-10 is scheduled to be in service with the USAF until 2028 and possibly later, when it may be replaced by the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II."

The F35 and A10 perform two different roles. Besides, being so incredibly expensive, the F35 wouldn't be an ideal choice for in-close ground support.

That statement is followed by...

" Critics have responded by saying that replacing the A-10 with the F-35 would be a "giant leap backwards" given the performance of the Warthog and the rising costs of the F-35 program."

Looks like a lot of people agree.

Want Tough?

Here is tough

Damned thing got hit by AAA over Baghdad, lost part of it's horizontal Stabilizer, as well as it's right engine and had some damage to the right rudder. Flew home without giving much of a -blam!-.

I love the A-10. Some times I boot up ArmA II, throw up a few columns of tanks, throw on Kick Start my Heart and proceed to kick ass.

Nah brah. Gotta get that Kenny Loggins going while doing gun runs.

'Cept the Spooky is only used in connection with Special Forces, on dark nights, low cloud ceiling, at 50,000 feet.

I'd much rather have a Warthog covering my ass than a Spooky.

A-10 can do it all in terms of CAS. It replaced the Sandy which was used as a Support for Search and Rescue efforts for downed pilots.

We need a slow, low flying aircraft that is able to take punishment, and dish 100x more out.

No to mention they're destruction on demand whereas it takes quite a bit of tape cutting to get authorization for a Spectre.

The A-10 has a max munitions load of 7260kg, the F-35 has a max munitions load of 8100kg.

The A-10 does have 1 extra hardpoint, but that's only if you don't include the F-35's mid-mounted hardpoint which is primarily designed for an external gun.
