Subject: Is this a good gaming laptop?

So, is the general consensus that this is a good purchase. Mind you, I'm not looking for an absolute monster. Just an above average performing laptop that can last me a while.

3-5 YEARS
Holy crap. Sold. I didnt think it would be that long. Again, somewhat clueless when it comes to some of this.

Also, If I bought this, how many months/years will it be before it becomes moderately 'outdated'

Laptops start on the lower end of specs because they need to be portable. The specs of pretty much any laptop will be "outdated" when compared to their desktop equivalent. That being said, I'd give most modern technologies about 3-5 years from their start date (the i7 in your linked laptop is Ivy Bridge (2012) and the GPU is from 2012) before something worthwhile to spend the money needed to upgrade comes by.

Hardware is advancing faster than the software that manipulates it. I say that time span because I factor in the cost of upgrading versus the overall performance increase one gets out of something. I run the latest hardware with Ivy Bridge and GTX 670s, but my friend who has his GTX 480 still performs just fine in any of the games he plays. It's only when you hit maximum thresholds do they start to differentiate. I'd say the same can be applied to laptops as well.

You will most likely not be impressed with the laptop after a mere 2 years (or less!), but factoring in what you get by spending the same amount of money you're going to spend now, then, it's not worth it.
