If we want to get technical here, the earth would initially continue in existence but after thousands of years of human evolution and progress to what we sought to be the "greater good" we have changed our planet so much that if we suddenly vanished as a race, the world might have some serious problems. For example, the many species of animals and plants that we have genetically engineered (this includes all breeds of house pets and almost everything we eat) would not necessarily be able to continue in existence. In a small scale, the Chi-wawa dog can not possible hunt for itself or gather any type of food so that entire breed is now non-existent. Another possible problem is all the buildings we work so hard to maintain. If we were removed, it would take years for nature to reclaim all the land back. So although, everything may not be effected, the world would most certainly take significant time to return to its original state.
Next, although i dont believe in this "higher purpose" stuff, i would like to mention that as much as scientist's have criticized human evolution, it has still evolved to serve a good purpose.

"Mother Earth"
The earth is a living organism. Without it we do not exist.
--
All of these elements work together blindly in unison to serve the needs of a higher being... earth
I believe the essence that unspeakingly binds them together is the soul of the world
But without us, earth still exists. So, your idea of everything serving a higher purpose (earth) is wrong.
