Subject: Cars Now a Days...

Are worse than they are in the past.

I totalled my Toyota Previa (mini-van) about a month ago and we needed to replace it with a new mini-van. Me and my dad started looking at the new Siennas, but they just aren't good IMO. Compared to our totaled mini-van the Sienna sucks.

My dad also had a 2003 CLK Benz, he upgraded to the 2009 CLK Benz only to find out that he had actually downgraded because the electronics in that car were far worse then the 2003. He then upgraded to the 2012 E-coupe benz and found that everything was similar to the 2003 CLK he had earlier.

TL;DR - New cars are worse than the older ones IMO

What is opinion on new cars today compared to older ones?

There are bad cars made today, and good cars made today.

There were good cars made before, and bad cars made before.

Older ones FTW.

You don't have to be a computer technician to take apart your vehicle and fix it yourself.

You ever find yourself in a situation involving your vehicle sinking in water you won't die from the electric windows and door locks not working.

Some of the older ones are cheaper on gas and insurance.

The really old ones are built like tanks and won't crumple under a slight bump.

As far as craftmanship is concerned, I agree.

However, technology is making them faster, safer, and more reliable.

Agreed.

I wanted to install a brand new audio system in my '04 Honda Accord, and it honestly took me about 3 hours tops. The dashboard comes apart like Legos and the wiring was extremely simple.

When this thing hits 88 mph....

Oh god. The Previa was a horrible minivan. Compared to the competitors, it had a very strange style, weak engine, poor mileage, and high pricetage.

The Previa is one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen.

Minivans lol.
OT: Most new cars have too many gadgets for my tastes. I prefer simplicity over all this stupid gadget crap that cars have. There are still some new cars that I like quite a lot.

I find that new cars are loaded with computers and electronics, making them way more advanced. This isn't always the best thing to do though, as electronics tend to go bad, especially when the elements come into play. (Especially rats)

Electronics are harder to diagnose, harder to fix, and cost more to fix than mechanical parts. They go bad faster and are some times just not needed.

Let us look at the reason why. People. To live and function in our current planet, life is fast, and expensive. People have gotten lazier, and less smart. Most people on the road today are idiots. Let's face it. They never use their turn signals, they cut you off, they brake in the middle of the highway when nothing should be causing them to brake. They eat while driving, they talk on the phone, text, all these things that could easily kill someone.

To fit a lazy, stupid populace, cars have to have more things to keep people from killing other people. They have to have Stability Control, Traction Control, Automatic Transmissions. Hell cars are going to drive themselves soon.

People are dumb. You know some people on the road don't even know what Manual Transmission is? They've never heard of it before. They can't drive without all these driving aids. The only one I can see as good is power steering. You really shouldn't drive with it if you depend on the information from the steering itself, but for normal driving you don't need it or need it. You can go either way.

Tell me, how many people really need traction control on a daily basis? How many of you floor it in your 500 HP RWD supercars at a stoplight? Most of you have never spun the wheels of your car. Yeah I think automatic transmissions are good in stop in go traffic, but you need to know how to drive manual. It's called standard for a reason.

Cars aren't as good because they aren't as simple. If they were simple then they would be better, more reliable, more fun. Cars aren't built the way they used to because they have to fit a populace where most people don't know how to properly drive. I wonder how long it will be until Turn Signals are an optional extra.

The Previa was the greatest mini-van ever built.

The styling was amazing, sure it looked a little weird, but it was unique in its own way, and was more aerodynamic .

The engine was a beast and wasn't even that weak seeing as how it could tow 3500 lbs. Compared to its competitors? Its competitors were horrible and were all american To compete with the competition they added a supercharger to it on all stock models after 94 and made the engine stronger. Upped the HP by about 20/25 horses.

Poor mileage? if 20 mpg is poor mileage to you then you have a problem, most cars today get a little above 20 mpg, 20 mpg during the 90's was pretty good.

High Price tag? My dad bought his brand new for about 25k. Today a brand new Sienna sells for about 28/30K so the price hasn't changed.

On top of all this, that van was mid-engine, came supercharged, came in a standard transmission, was one of the first vans to introduce the 3rd seating fold down, and last but not least they last forever and are incredibly strong.

My van lasted 243,000 miles and was still going strong, others have experienced mileage over 300k, 500k and 700k miles!

Lastly, my car was totaled by getting T-boned by an 18 wheeler and I survived!! Everything was in great shape mechanics wise, the only thing damaged was a door, some windows and the frame of the car a little bit, but mechanics were unharmed.

I agree with you completely. We went shopping for the Sienna and all they advertised were the electronics nothing else. I don't care about electronics!!

This 100%

My dad has a very hard time figuring out the controls/electronics in his car and he always decides to learn to use it while he's driving. huge distraction!

We don't need all these fancy electronics in our cars, just the base electronics (radio, power windows, power mirrors etc).
