I re-emphasize that if I didnt have a gun, I could be dead or broke.
I pray that you are never in that situation without a good way to defend yourself. My point being that he may never have had a gun in the first place, if people like you were willing to surrender your own. It's a cause and effect cycle revolving around the same struggle of helplessness and power that people take advantage of, with only the "law abiding citizens" barely keeping up because of the same laws they uphold for that very reason. The ones not willing to be offensive with firearms are the ones who will always lose out somewhere along the lines, while those using them to commit crimes will always be ahead. The best you can do is to cut your losses.
Somewhat carrying on from the previous paragraph, for example, there is no way in hell I'd see the adolescents and young adults here have legal access to firearms. I would literally move country because I know they're not trustworthy with them. The problem in the US is that the laws favour the wrong people, assuming that everyone under them is trustworthy until proven otherwise. And when they are proven otherwise, they're blown off as being "unfortunate, unpreventable tragedies". In a country that condones violence to such a degree as the 'States, do you really expect to see less gun crime with things staying the way they are?
More on a personal note, assuming the only person who had an illegal firearm was the person who assailed yourself and your property, would you rather have been a sole victim in place of the many killed in recent shootings?
And actually, I have been the target of violence on a fairly regular basis. I've never needed a gun to defend myself, and I don't see any of the situations turning out better if I did.
