What the Hell? Why is she asking you and what's it going towards?

How much is it costing you to adopt?

A lot. We will be paying off the loans for a long time.

I figured as much.

How much is the mother asking for? $1000?
About $9,000 or so.

Damn, that's quite a bit.

I wouldn't. I'd might give her a bit for food and water though - if she's really that poor like you said.

Do we have any responsibility to her beyond what the law and our agreement with the adoption agency states?
Hell no.

  • 01.06.2013 1:45 PM PDT

You actually have a responsibility to report her for violating the trust that has been established in this relationship.

That would probably only complicate matters in the adoption, though, which I am sure you are trying to avoid.

"You are the last of your kind: bred for combat, built for war. You're the master of any weapon, pilot of any vehicle, and fear no enemy"

If you're religious, proceed as whatever your religion says, and how you want to follow.

If not, you have no responsibility and she's being inappropriate for asking for money illegally.

Recon, the agency didn't put is in this position. The birth mom did. The agency said we can't even pay her directly. What we are wrestling with is if we have any responsibility beyond what we've already done. Do we have any responsibility to our child's siblings.

As someone who was adopted, I can assure you, most adopted kids do not feel any sort of connection to their siblings, nor do they feel obligated in any way towards them. Nor should you.

That's right. I just dropped some AOL IM protocol.

Chick ended up keepin the baby.

On top of it all, what could she possibly need help with? I guarantee you she has food stamps, medicare, help with electric bill, on top of what you are giving her. I would not assist her, especially not for 9k.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

The Button

What about after the adoption?

I'm not saying that you should give her money, you're not obligated to. She is giving her child up for adoption with the hopes(I hope this is why) of the child getting a better life. She should be proud that you're doing this, it should be enough for her.

You should also explain that you can't pay her because of the law(s) against it. If I were you I would rather not risk losing the baby.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

The email address she contacts us at was created and monitored by the adoption agency. The told us how to respond within hours of her sending the email.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

No, not morally and certainly not legally. If she decided to put her baby up for adoption, well that is her decision and it has nothing whatsoever to do with you. Beyond that, it is morally wrong for her to ask you to break the law because she wants your money.
