If you're coming to Asia pretty much everyone speaks english but mandarin/chinese is a handy language to know

Because Asia consists entirely of China.

China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong have Chinese-speaking majorities. A lot of people can't speak English [well] in these countries.

Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand etc. generally have more people who can speak english well than, say, Hong Kong.

So does latin. :P
I took 2 years of Latin. No one speaks it.

I've got to wonder though, since Spanish, French, Italian, and a few other languages are based off of Latin, is there enough common ground to understand and communicate with those languages?

Well, that would explain why he is uninformed in the ways of the world. Because Americans are definitely the most world-savvy people out there.

Yeah... I'm that cool.
Robot Academy. Kinda sorta the best group on here.

I studied Latin for 7 years. It definitely helps to better understand and learn the languages that are derived from it, but just knowing Latin definitely isn't enough to communicate in the languages that are based on it.

Depends on where you are going.
If you are going to Europe the German, Spanish and French will be useful.

If you go to Japan then bring someone who can speak Japanese. You might be okay with just English if you're in Tokyo but as for the rest of Japan pretty much no one speaks English.
