Subject: People with Anxiety

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

To cut to the point, I am tutoring someone for their science GCSEs and they have got some pretty severe anxiety issues. This can make it difficult to check that they understand a topic when they only whisper answers or can't talk.

Can anyone give suggestions as to how I might help them overcome this or ways to make it easier for them?

Just your two cents/pence would be appreciated.

To cut to the point,

Already belaboring the point. And I have no advice. I'm useless in every aspect.

I know everything, I've just forgotten most of it.

Also, my XBL Gamertag is 'Wenggh', not 'A Stolen Fruit'.

Not sure if this'll help, but try being more friendly towards them?

If they keep being afraid of the unknown it's better to stay in the safe zone.

If you keep yourself from performing, you will achieve nothing.

I quit smoking because it gave me severe anxiety.

See the thing is, I know them fairly well and I am being friendly to them so it isn't as bad as if I was a stranger. But it is still quite bad for them :/

Oh wait, I do have actually pertinent advice.

Group work...all done in class of course. Get them talking out loud to each other. That always loosens kids up. I know my Spanish classes are the most fun and interactive because we are forced to talk to each other.

I guess everyone can react differently to it. Maybe you were using too much?

Group work might not be possible since I am private tutoring at their house.

Well then who on earth are they whispering to?

WAIT. I re-read your post...now I get it.

Ok, I need to post a silly answer.

Tape a Microphone to their shirt, so they can't whisper!

Ok, for realsies, I think that idea about the group stuffs is a good one!

Well...perhaps have them see a psychologist/psychiatrist...did the trick for me.

  • 01.06.2013 2:38 AM PDT

Rather than overcome anxiety, I'd like to have mass amounts of anxiety, because they allow people with severe anxiety to keep cats in their dorm room at my school.

I just want a cat, dammit.

I'm not sure if psychotherapy is the proper response to "a student is kinda quiet in class."

Well, they are actually. Oddly enough the same one my brother is seeing who works with the one I went to.

They have quite a few issues of their own :/

but only a scant few of my hooker corpses are arranged in rectangles

I have really bad anxiety and I can honestly say that knowing a teacher/tutor understands your anxiety problems makes you much more comfortable with them. And I'm sure you're kind to him but make sure you are because its awful needing to talk to a teacher you're intimidated by

Then you really ought to try my suggestion.

Do YOU even get over it?

  • 01.06.2013 3:42 AM PDT

There's no definite way to just stop it. I've had help with countering it, but I've found no way to get rid of it altogether.

Tell them that they can try writing notes telling them that they can get through it, and that they are going to do it. Stick them on your wall, and read it every day. I know it sounds stupid, but it has helped me, and I no longer make myself vomit every day. It only happens sometimes.
They could also try repeating a specific word over and over in their head to distract them from the anxiety. Use a specific word that has meaning.

Life?
I have the internet and Doctor Who; i don't need a life.

i hope that's a joke.
Anxiety can be extremely crippling and life-destroying, you DO NOT want too much of it.

  • 01.06.2013 3:59 AM PDT

That really really depends on the person. Some feel better in a more professional environment and others feel more comfortable in a friendly one. See how he reacts to either. Recommend CBT or group therapy to him as well.

Although to be honest if I knew how to beat anxiety I'd be rolling in -blam!-es right now.
