Subject: Sony Anti-Used Game Patent Leads to GameStop Stock Plunge

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
- Dr. Seuss

The technology - which tags individual game copies with information about previous use - could potentially be used to restrict the use of a game to one machine or user account. This could mean bad news for the US retailer - a major player in the pre-owned market.
The market responded to the news with selloffs of GameStop shares, resulting in the retailer's share prices falling by $1.57 to $24.09.

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities moved to appease investors, claiming Sony would be unwise to implement the technology to its full potential. "Sony would be materially hurt if its console blocked used games and competitor consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo did not," Pachter wrote in a note to investors.

"We think the reaction is overblown," he continued. Indeed, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is reportedly against moves to implement technology designed to block used games.

Elsewhere, an analyst for Janney Capital has noted a similar pattern in the lead up to the PS3's launch.

I feel like sony is actually trying to kill their fan-base.

That in itself is the killing blow to whatever new console SOny are making, if it does have it.

In a twist of beliefs not seen since The Sixth Sense, Sony patent on anti-used-game technology prevents competitors from implementing a similar system.

In all reality, the stock plunge is usual for the end-of-the-year stocks. Stocks decrease when there is uncertainty and there was reason for uncertainty at the end of December last year.

I hate Gamestop.

That has been my contribution. Thank you for reading.

  • 01.06.2013 9:21 AM PDT

Haha good, GameStop should stop selling used games for about £5 less than the new copies.

  • 01.06.2013 9:21 AM PDT

So their greed could lead to their downfall?

And on the day Sony would go third party, SEGA announces their return in the console market.

That's true, but still escapes me how Sony could do that to the used-game market.

Think Gamestop will try to do something about that?

So the world might be mended...

They're not stupid enough to use it to prevent used games, if anything it'll be used as an anti-piracy method.

I don't see why everybody seems to assume that just because they filed the patent means they'll definitely use it to prevent used games, they also have the patent to have ads during loading screens and they have done nothing with that.

EDIT: Everybody in the thread actually believes that they'll use it....wow

EDIT2: The Flood is full of idiots early morning on the weekends it seems...

“I didn't want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep. And that's really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when you wake up from a nightmare you're so relieved. I woke up into a nightmare.”

GameStop and Sony are both bad sooooooooooooooo...

Dear Floodians:

A Girl thread a day keeps the ladies at bay and gets us banned, the lonely single way.

If they actually plan on doing that, they'd cripple themselves extremely hard. I doubt retailers would even want to sell PS4 games anymore.

Heavy weighs the crown, low hangs the head who wears it.

How does Sony plan to distribute their games without retailers? Not everyone has the bandwidth to download every game they buy.

From talking to a friend of mine who works at a local game shop I can tell you they make all of their profit from used games. According to him: they make about $1 from the sale of a new game.

I don't get why there's so muxh hate from used games in the industry. I mean you already got your $60 once. Why do you need it again?

I'm hard pressed to call people "fans" when they want to kill Sony.

I don't think GameStop is going anywhere soon. If anything Microsoft and/or Nintendo will see this as an opportunity to partner with GameStop to have more discounts or whatnot to drive up business and -blam!- with Sony.

I don't see why they wouldn't. It's still some money in the pockets of retailers.

So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

If anyone buys a PS4 knowing all about this anti-used games crap, I will facedesk in disappointment. I would never by that console. Used games may not earn much for the developer but it helps the small stores make money and keeps the economy. So if Sony and Gamestop are actually going to screw stuff up and people still buy stuff from both of them, that will be disappointing,

Give me a picture like that which clearly wasn't written by a PC-blam!- or PS-blam!- who obviously has never owned or touched a 360 and I'll give you my time.
