America invaded British North America (i.e Canada).

America failed.

America lost.

Apparently that is all that happened according to this thread other than burning down the White House

Britain only had one real victory ohtside of the defense of canada, the Battle of Bladensburg which allowed them to burn Washington. America managed to repel multiple British invasion forces at Baltimore, New York, and New Orleans.

In the end no one really took any territory from one another and nobody won.

I guess the brits technically won it, but the Battle of New Orleans made Andrew Jackson a national hero and allowed him to win the presidency which ushered in a new era of American nationalism and expansion, so indirectly America benefited from the war.

Also it doesn't really matter that the White House was burned down, they rebuilt it like a year after the war was over.

  • 01.06.2013 11:35 AM PDT

No one won. Neither side accomplished anything.

There was fighting all over the place, but that was basicly it. The Americans won the last battle (I think it was in Louisiana?),but the war had already ended by then, they just haddent heard yet.

America got humiliated.
A thirty-something-year-old country took on the biggest naval power in the world in a mostly naval conflict. The fact that the US didnt get totally reconquered is enough to call it a stalemate.

What doesn't kill you, only makes you stranger

When you look at what was accomplished, it's hard to say Britain didn't win. When you look at the document ending the war, it calls it a ceasefire.

Britain won a personal victory that doesn't really count. America didn't lose, so we call it a win.

but the whole point of the bloody war for America was to capture and take over what is now Canada and they failed.

Only because of British impressment of American merchants to the British Navy, British support of American Indian tribes against American expansion, and trade restrictions brought about by Britain's ongoing war with France.

and that means nothing when talking about past wars. The only thing that should be looked at are the objectives and who won. The objective of the invasion was the capture what is now Canada and did America meet the sole reason for the war? No they did not, it doesn't matter why you start a war. The only thing that matters are objectives and meeting those objectives.

Then why is, as everyone in this thread keeps saying, burning down the White House the reason the Brits won.
