The objective of the US was to have their grievances addressed, and when the cease fire was called the US got just about everything it wanted. Therefore by using your logic the US won the war of 1812.

America got humiliated.
A thirty-something-year-old country took on the biggest naval power in the world in a mostly naval conflict. The fact that the US didnt get totally reconquered is enough to call it a stalemate.
but the whole point of the bloody war for America was to capture and take over what is now Canada and they failed.
Then why is, as everyone in this thread keeps saying, burning down the White House the reason the Brits won.
because they are idiots. America: capture what is now Canada. Britain: stop America from capturing what is now Canada.

Guess what? Canada is still a commonwealth of the U.K not part of America so by using logic Britain won.

The reason why we tried to invade Canada was to not expand its territory(we got plenty 9 years prior) but to get Britain's attention and stop them from impressing American merchants among other things.

impressment ended and we were able to trade with Europe. America was in a better position after the war then before the war. By using logic america won.

To me it was a draw and stupid war. At the end of the day, everything was just like before the war. I guess in the long run America *won* because it gave them confidence to expand the country and be more of a force in their sphere.

How is this even up for speculation? Canada/England kicked Americas buttz.

I'm obligated to post this.

That song is ridiculously wrong. The Canadians held the line until the British arrived, and it was the British who burnt Washington down.

It's still goddamned hilarious.
Even though the Alamo had nothing to do with America, and Vietnam wasn't "technically" a war (but I'll still hold that the U.S. got their self-righteous asses kicked).

In America we say its a tie but in England they say they won but in all reality England didn't care about the war because they were too busy dealing with napoleon and felt that america stabbed them in the back for the war of 1812.

Okay, maybe not everything but still, what was really accomplished? It only ended in with a truce.

America invaded British North America (i.e Canada).

America failed.

America lost.

The British invaded the New Orleans area.

The British failed.

The British lost.

It was a tie, if you say otherwise you're retarded. Especially if you use the "hurdur burnt down the capital" because using that logic both the UK and France lost WW2.

Only London wasn't burnt down... :/

Parts were bombed. Nowhere near 'capital burnt down'

No one. It ended with a ceasefire.

And then Andrew Jackson was like lolno.

Canadians bragging about how they defeated the United States in 1812 would be akin to the British saying that they defeated the Germans during the second world war.

London was razed during World War 2 to a far, FAR greater extent than Washington was in this instance, which led to the UK (and western Europe as a whole) catapulting itself into a deep recession imminently after the second World War, with the only thing keeping them afloat being aid and loans from the United States.

The only parts of Washington that was destroyed were the public buildings (post offices, the White House, the Capitol building, Treasury, etc.), while private buildings were kept intact by British request. And the occupation only lasted about a day, whereas the blitzing in London went on for months and destroyed a measurable portion of the city. It's hardly even comparable.

Play. Forge. Film.

Okay first of all it wasn't England. It was Great Britain at the time. And America got destroyed in the War of 1812. They took over Washington D.C.

'Nuff said.

Officialy it was a cease-fire.
