Subject: High Powered Rifles: What's more important?

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Please allow me to introduce Myself

I've been around for a long, long year

OK, when considering a rifle, what is more important? How powerful the rifle is, or how quickly you can reload it?

I don't care about the application, you fill in that blank. I just want to know what you prefer.

Shakes Magic 8 Ball

I look for neither of those qualities when I look at firearms.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Caliber is not the same as "stopping power" (which is better described as "terminal energy transfer" or more simply "lethality").

True "high power" rifles are distance guns. Reloading and knock down power are kinda irrelevant for those applications.

*AK's and AR's are not high power rifles.

You know what's even worse?

When the boy you like has a girlfriend.

The bigger the game, the more lethal I want it to be.

For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.

While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

It depends entirely on the application. Generally speaking however, stopping power and range are the first priority.

Military application: better range - you can shoot the enemy before he can shoot you. It doesn't matter if you can fire a million rounds in a minute if you can't hit the target.

Hunting application: range and stopping power - clean kill, the animal doesn't suffer.

Self-defense: size, maneuverability, and weight - concealed carry, size and weight wear on you fast; in-house defense, it needs to be fast to bring on target, plus it needs to be limited to something that won't go through the wall and keep on going, which is why AR-15s are great defense weapons. .223 has a hard time penetrating objects, it tends to stop where it hits, and you have 30 rounds per magazine, generally speaking, to deal with the situation.

Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

If you can kill somebody with just one shot, it won't matter how long it takes to load another shot.

Accuracy should be the main concern for your purchase. Next should be stopping power, because any application where reloading time is crucial means you're a poor shot and need more practice. Besides, there's really know reason you need both.

As far as accuracy goes, bolt action is going to be the top of the game, but some semi-automatic rifles are not too far behind. For calibur, I suggest .223 for anyone looking for a beginner/moderate rifle, as the ammunition is cheap, but it's not a super light round, and fills a nice middle-of-the-round niche.
