At least for me, a Halo title has always been defined by it's maps. The Halo series has created some of the best competitive play areas in FPS history, with maps such as Blood Gulch, Beaver Creek, Hang 'Em High, Ascension, Headlong, Lockout, Midship, Ivory Tower, Guardian, High Ground, Valhalla, Narrows, The Pit, Countdown, and Powerhouse only to name a few. (I know, that was more than a few. But let's face it, Halo has some great maps. Also, I intentionally did not list any Halo 4 maps as to not disrupt the nostalgia)

Every game will have it's bad eggs, for example Chiron TL-34, Isolation, and Boardwalk. But more than any other FPS franchise, Halo has always been able to deliver fun and memorable maps. When I reflect upon past Halo games, the most iconic image in my mind are the maps. Of course core gameplay mechanics are a major concern as to the success of a title, and everyone has their own taste when it comes to this, but maps are usually what bind a Halo multiplayer experience together.

With that being said, I believe Halo 4 has some of the best entries in the series. Up until the release of the Crimson Map Pack and that damn map Wreckage there wasn't a single map in the game in which I would loathe to play. Often times I would groan after Ragnarok or Haven would be upvoted, but hey, that's only because I play them so much and that really says something about their design. Halo 4 has some very solid maps in its lineup and that's what keeps me coming back. The very fact that I enjoy playing in the spaces makes the game pretty memorable for me. I've already written a lot, so I won't delve much deeper, but the reasons I feel this way are thus...

-Great flow
-Easy to navigate
-Controllable locations
-Good mix of asm/symetrical, large, medium, and small
-Defined play areas
-Memorable, various, and distinct scenery/environments
-Compliment gameplay mechanics
-Distinguished call points

I dislike some maps because I'm just not good on them and I like the maps I sync well with. Don't care for much less.

The only game where I actually desire a few more smaller maps

No. Halo 4 has the worst. Halo 2 had the best variety of large and small maps.

I like the maps IMO, but i'd like to see a map other than a Open area map. Something like Narrows or The Pit.

Halo 2. umad?

Get the hell off my planet!

In Halo 4? The maps are hit and miss for me. Do they come close to past maps? Maybe one or two of them in my eyes. I think Abandon is one of the better ones in Halo 4.

Two makes there more than speakers.

The only maps worth mentioning out of Halo 4 are Haven and Adrift.

I'm okay with this

  • 01.06.2013 4:36 PM PDT

Haven is probably my least favorite.

  • 01.06.2013 4:36 PM PDT

It's Pokémon, not Pokemon!

Halo 4 didn't have maps that "stand out," IMO.

  • 01.06.2013 4:36 PM PDT

Narrows was awful and Countdown was possibly the worst map ever to be in Halo.

The only map I hate in Halo 4 is Complex because of the -blam!- spawns and there's hardly ANY cover when you're outside of the buildings.

  • 01.06.2013 4:37 PM PDT

Do you like Green Eggs and Ham???

The only maps I can really stand are Complex, Longbow, and Haven.

Exile is an awful map

This.

Halo 4's maps were better, but all of them suffer from their adaptation to Infinity Slayer, and thus don't work very well in objective gametypes.

I beg to differ. Meltdown, Longbow, and Shatter are some phenomenal BTB maps in my opinion. Abandon is one the best FFA maps I have had the pleasure of playing also.

Halo Wars has better damn maps than Halo 4.

Reach and H4 have the worst, hands down.

Dude all H4 maps are poor. Not a single map stands out for me except Longbow and Ragnarok, and even in H3 Valhalla was a mediocre map at best.

Certain Affinity just can't design engaging and well-balanced maps. I'm looking for good BTB maps like Headlong, Containment, Relic, Avalanche, Zanzibar or Standoff. Instead I get maps that are too cluttered, too open, too forced and unremarkable.
