Two Words: Del Rio.
Out of curiosity, why do you hate him so much? I certainly didn't like him, but I can't really say I understand where you're coming from.Simply put, Del Rio is not a believable character whatsoever. He's supposed to have served in the Navy for 30 years, fighting against the Covenant, and has now been put in charge of the latest and greatest ship in the UNSC fleet, but there is not a single moment in the Campaign where he does not reek of incompetancy, inferiority, and doesn't act like a level 10 asshat.
There was absolutely no need to make him as terrible and over the top as he was. For a campaign that featured some pretty believable characters like Tillsman and Lasky, I was shocked that they even allowed over the top lines like "I'm ordering you... TO SURRENDER THAT AI!" to even make it off the storyboards. I've shown that scene to a ton of people, even folks who haven't played a videogame in their life, and most of them burst out laughing at how ridiculous and unbelievable of a character he was.
Do I need to continue? I could elaborate easily if that helps you understand where I'm coming from.Saying that Del Rio isn't a believable character is a completely valid point, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing.
When referring to a character in a fantasy universe, you can usually substitute the words "believable" or "realistic" with "boring." Sure, 343 went a little over the top with Del Rio, making him a hyperbole of an ass hat. But this is exactly what makes him interesting and memorable. It's easy to remember him and what he says because everything about him is so ridiculous. Taking his character to unbelievable extremes makes him hard to ignore and forces a reaction out of the player.
A major reason why Charles Dickens was considered such a great writer was because he made his characters so ridiculous and unbelievable.
