If you went back in time and killed your past self, have you committed murder, or have you committed suicide?
This is assuming that time is straightforward. Any action that you perform on your past self has no impact on your current self. So, if you killed your past self from a year ago, you'll still have that scar that you got six months ago. The person you kill is indeed you, but you are independent of each other.
So, what is it? To commit murder is to kill another person in cold blood. Your past self has done nothing wrong to you and you are not killing them in self-defense. But to commit suicide is to kill oneself, and you are clearly killing yourself. DNA tests prove that you and your past self are indeed one in the same. And if it's suicide, does this mean that the justice system can't punish you? After all, you killed yourself.
Feel free to discuss. I'm just curious as to what others think.
