While I recognize that the gun shows have a right to exist, I am not supportive of them. The culture is too loose about selling firearms. That most people in attendance think that anyone anywhere should be able to buy a gun with 0 tracking and 0 accountability...

If they were to be banned, I would not shed a tear for them.

Completely agree with this. It's a shame how lenient people are with the distribution of firearms, regardless of the deals you get there. Hopefully they do get banned.

My town just got done with a gun show, and the place was packed from the moment it opened. think my friend bought 1000 rounds of ammo while he was there.

Close, but the plague killed those infected with it, and the ignorant are still alive.
I wish ignorance was a plague.

Even though I'm in support of further restrictions I think this is a bit ridiculous.

I am curious, what do you support?

Very serious background checks and personal guns only being handguns.
Also you could have rifle under a hunting licence or sport.
The majority of gun crime is committed using(usually illegally owned) handguns. In 2011, out of all the murders where firearms were used, only 3.75% of them involved rifles.

Do these people honestly believe that banning gun shows will stop mass shootings?

Question: How do people do background checks at gun shows?

Does a background check take days if not weeks for a round trip? If so, are guns being sold and given to people at gun shows without background checks being performed?

If that is the case, then of course gun shows should be banned.

with the advent of technological breakthroughs we now have access to this thing called the world wide web. We also have cell phone carriers that can deliver wireless internet. So you can, just like the CC readers, get a wireless connection, if the venue doesn't have internet, to send requests. Or you can always call them in on the phone like most do.

*Paid for stuff at the last con he went to with his credit card getting swiped on the seller's phone.*

Tell me more about this world wide web thing.

If they are taking personal and payment info at the gun show, waiting for the background check and then mailing the gun to the person, I don't have a problem with that.

That's fine.

NICS, otherwise known as the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

Sales by FFL holders (the majority of vendors at a show) cannot be completed without a pass from this system.

The people who are non-FFL holders are show attendees (usually walking around with their personal firearm(s) on display) and the sale/exchange is no different than someone who put an ad in the classified section of the paper. "What is that and how much do you want for it?" And those sales/exchanges typically require (based on the state and the show host requirements) that a transfer of ownership document (showing who sold it and who they sold it to, along with proper ID numbers) to be completed.

Folks need to visit a show if they are uncertain or uncomfortable with the idea/concept. They may be pleasantly surprised. They are far more civil, polite and organized than any fan-convention (comic, games, sci-fi, tech, or other industry) that I have been to.

To my knowledge, it takes more than just a few minutes for a background check..

The NICS is an instant FBI ran background check system.

I'm not uncomfortable with the idea of a gun show.

Only that proper steps are being taken to identify buyers. If not, there's a problem. Since they are. I don't have a problem.

  • 01.07.2013 10:45 AM PDT

They need to regulate gun shows how about. People can walk in with 500 bucks and buy 2 guns then leave without any background checks or anything.

To my knowledge it doesnt. My last three purchases took me ten minutes to do. Then again i have had background checks done by NASA, Langley, CIA and military done lately for other reasons.

Yes and no. Depends on who they buy from. Read the whole thread here, there's more info.

What kind of idiots go to gun shows anyway? Most have too much time on their hands.

Thats like saying, What kind of idiots go to the movies?
What kind of idiots go to sports events?
What kind of idiots go to concerts?

Its a hobby. get over it.

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

As someone who has been to several gun shows, I can tell you that gun shows are probably where the most serious lapses in regulation occurs. I could buy and walk out with unregistered assault weapons with no background check or anything. The last one I was at horrified me because of all the obviously antisocial people buying military-grade weapons.

Gun shows should by no means be banned, but holy hell, at least have SOME form of regulation. At the very least, make it required to provide proof of a cleared background check and psychological exam or something. I understand that there are many independent vendors who are nothing more than collectors selling their stock, but have them comply with these regulations or forbid them to participate in the show.

I do. There's always some really good home-made beef jerky to be found. Every once in a while there will be a good deal on magazines and ammo.

If you witnessed such events, you were witnessing a crime. I hope that you reported it.

An assault rifle requires specific conditions to be owned and transferred (as has been the case since 1934).

Your use of the term "military grade" to denote a firearm is odd. Interesting, but odd. There is no such thing. A firearm is either military or it is not. If you are saying "it LOOKS like a military arm", then that is silly. There is no functional difference between a "ranch rifle" and a civilian-legal Armalite action rifle. If you are about to call them "high powered", be careful there too. The 5.56/.223 cartridge is considered and classified as an "intermediate" cartridge. It is neither "high powered" or "military grade".

I am also impressed with your ability to notice that there were no legal checks, AND you could tell who was "anti-social".

In all, I am skeptical of your claims simply because they are dubious and use inflammatory, inaccurate and skewing adjectives.

This has changed.

Want a magazine? Throw up 100 dollars for that 30 round PMAG.

That is why I am not even going to my show this weekend. Way to many people and it's going to be a price gougers paradise.

It will die down eventually. I give it till April.

Were these gun shows held in someone's back yard, or a back alley, perhaps?
