My troll sense is tingling.

Fall of Reach. Because it had something that resembled character development and had memorable set pieces.

Halo Reach ; came from developers, and if the book hadn't made it so restrictive for the devs, then a truly good story could have come from it.

I'm more for Halo: Reach. Troll me if you want, I just liked how it tied in nicely at the end as a prequel.

EDIT: I agree with the above.

Fall of Reach had a far better story than Halo: Reach.

Reach's biggest problem is that while Fall of Reach is a great book, it doesn't set the stage very well for a videogame. I feel Reach suffered in part by the need to attempt to obey the framework set up by the Fall of Reach, but also the need to be a decent campaign. They essentially shot themselves in the foot 10 years earlier by writing it so that Reach was a one hour battle.

There's that, and the fact that Reach failed to sell the entire "the planet is being invaded" thing except for at the beginning of the 5th mission.

>game you can play for hours on end, different experience each time

>epic book that you throw away once read

Butt ugly apeā€ remarked Sergeant Johnson always making fun out of the situation even though he had been hit by a spiker round in the arm. He mustered up the strength to continue and the team moved on. The Arbiter informed him that the next room held The Prophet of Truth and this was the final room before extraction. Jun proposed that he takes a shot from a distance the prophet and they all head back to the ship bay for extraction. The team agreed on this and breached the last door…

Sad how a book can better than a book...

Agreed.

They did at least try to wiggle out of that.

Oh, I give them a ton of credit for wiggling. The drawbacks of the Campaign concern me far less than the drawbacks of the multiplayer.

I disagree. They could have actually implemented the superb storytelling method of ODST's flashbacks and used that to jump from various Spartans, starting from the battle of Sigma Octanus IV where you discover Installation 04's coordinates to ending with Operation: FIRST STRIKE, tying together CE's end with 2's beginning as well.

All of the pieces technically fit.

Still doesn't stop people from claiming that Reach broke canon.

Never read the book, so I have to pick Halo: Reach.

I disagree. Again, there's a conflicting need to obey canon and to have a good videogame. Spartans don't get shields for a majority of The Fall of Reach, not to mention, the individual actions of each of the Spartans are very well documented, so unless you wanted to have a game that literally followed the perspective of some of the spartans (padding the level with about a billion times the number of Covenant that they encounter in the book), it's really not going to be the same sort of experience.

I definitely think trying to go with a original story was the best decision, it's better than trying to retell a story that was already told well the first time. Unfortunately there were too many factors working against Bungie this time around, though I still think there is a lot they could have done to salvage things, but it wasn't a total trainwreck in the end.

It's why I have high hopes for Destiny, with a blank slate, they not only have to put up with this crap anymore, they can design the story to last over the next 10 years so that this crap doesn't happen again.

They could have picked a less... told... portion of the Halo Universe to follow.

But unless you follow the rest of the universe told in comics and books, any other setting would be foreign to most gamers.

I don't read the Halo novels. I actually really liked Reach, I think it was probably the weakest Halo campaign it was still good though
