Subject: Do you see Psychology as a Science?

Recon Number 54 -
If they are still looking, then while holding the snarl, I let drool start to drip from my mouth, I stand, curl my fingers into claws and with a hunched over crouch, I then make slow and deliberate steps towards them. When I get close enough, I let them hear my agonized and gasping growls and then, if they continue to stare, when I get within arm's reach? I kiss them on the nose, and run away giggling.

I sometimes see it get a bit of flak for not being a real science like Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Personally I think it is a valid science and is getting increasingly valuable as a field to work in.

So, do you think it is a real science?
If not, why not?

Please do not send me group invites.

Soft science, yes.

It's a social science that is basically the application of biology.

I'm gonna finish it. Just like Jigga did to the pyramid.

If it meets the definition of a science (which it does) then it is a science.

The HELL you are! These are precious gifts to me and they are non-transferable! How dare you regift my challenge prize. You might as well hock a wedding ring for beer money. -DeeJ

Yes, it fits the definition of science.

I'll let my cat answer that one.

Do you see natural philosophy as science?

The lines between different subjects are often rather hard to pin down.

13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

Yes, but horribly inferior to the natural sciences.

And that was a needless use of the word "atrocious". "Foolish" would do the same job much more efficiently.

I haven't actually heard of natural philosophy.

But I know what you mean about blurred lines, The stuff we are doing in Biology and Chemistry is pretty much the same thing. Organic Chemistry and Molecular Biology all those CHOs

Maybe in the branch of evolutionary psychology. I don't see biology being applied more than that unless you want to also factor in neurological analysis.

No, not really. The emphasis was necessary.

  • 01.07.2013 11:27 AM PDT

Yes, it's a science. People who say that it isn't don't understand science. It's best to not give too much attention to what people who don't understand science say about science.

Natural philosophy is what gave birth to science.

It's pretty rare now, but a good example of philosophy presented in a scientific way can be found in Richard Swimburne's book 'Is There a God?', if you study philosophy or science (or are just interested in the whole theist vs. atheist debate) I would suggest giving it a read.

Vector quantities are in pure maths and mechanics
SUVATs are in mechanics and physics
Electron energy levels are in physics and chemistry
Proteins are in chemistry and biology
Brain structure is in biology and psychology
...

I'm sure other people could continue this list, not to mention add hundreds of other links between the subjects already listed. Honestly, anybody saying one science is superior to another with a reason more serious than to lead the conversation onto posting a humorous picture of a cat is an idiot.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

It attempts to use scientific principles, but it is attempting to apply them to human mental/social/emotional issues and so, will never get to the level of consistent reproducability.

Just like medicine is "practiced", Psychology is the attempt to understand how our minds function. Since we are not binary, nor are we consistent, the "science" will likely never reach the ability to reliably predict the actions/reaction/behavior of a specific individual or event.

In its own way, Psychology has it's own "Uncertainty Principle" that can never be resolved. Even probability is not going to be a reliable method when attempting to diagnose or treat individuals.
