Anyone live in Japan or have visited?
Though when you tell someone you're going to Japan, I hear it's a lot like telling someone you're going to the United States.
So, Okinawa.. to be exact.

Curious to hear any kind of experience you've had while living or visiting Japan. Especially if you're a foreigner. You hear stories about how Japanese treat foreigners and I'm wondering if there's any slight of truth to it.

My family and I have a chance to live in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years, come October. I'm pretty sure it will be a complete culture shock but an awesome one, nonetheless.

I've been told that I want to talk quieter and to not show cleavage.
Any tips?
Any stories?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

Talk Japanese.

Okinawa is pretty American-friendly, considering our military base there.

I have been to the Japan at Epcot does that count? Everyone in that section is from Japan.

I plan on starting to learn Japanese soon, actually. Thanks.

I just acted normal. Watched anime on a tablet in while walking from place to place.

  • 01.07.2013 1:36 PM PDT

BOOM Headshot!

I really want to go there it looks really nice. When I grow older and if the us is in a -blam!-hole I would want to move to japan

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

They want you to talk quietly in Japan?

My cultural preconceptions have just been shattered.

I've never been, but the martial art that I do originates from Okinawa. From what I know from kenpo, everyones very respectful, and they dislike the Japanese. I believe that they were occupied by them at one point in time.

It's just what I've heard. It's rude to talk loudly, is what I gather.Posted by: MadMax888

I definitely figured as much. We plan on living outside of the base for a real feel of living in another country... if that makes sense.

Some might argue the opposite. Some Okinawans REALLY dislike the US military presence, especially right after an incident that involves servicemen abusing the locals.

ProTip: Many Japanese will tell you that Okinawa "isn't really Japan". Much like some folks from the Northern and Western states are inclined to insult or distance themselves from "the south".

It sounds like something that you could regret doing. But something that you will regret not doing.

You have a choice in the matter don't you?

This.

Japans disliking Americans is a generalization, but the places where it can really hold true are around American bases.

For what it is worth, I've been to Japan twice and really enjoyed the culture. As long as you adapt to Japanese mannerisms, you'll find the people quite welcoming.

True. I guess my point wasn't that Okinawans [people who live in Okinawa?] love Americans, but rather that it's easy for an American to get around in Okinawa.

I've read some new articles about things like that before. Protests to get the military bases out of Japan, occurred. It's not like we've never been through a protest of some sorts before. My husband is currently a recruiter for the Army. Thankfully, it's not his actual MOS.
However, in another country, so unfamiliar to me..
I could say I'm a little uneasy about the move as a whole.
I just can't possibly let this chance slip away.

Also, anyone know about the education system for small children there?

Okay, these is a complete overhaul of my last post.

Never, Ever, EVER say you like Anime. Anime is considered a childish activity and is frowned upon by people older the age of 12 unless they are an Otaku.

Speak the language. Even the smallest bit of speaking the language and just kindergarten level speaking is better than not being able to, and if you know some of the language people tend to have more respect for you.

When buying electronics try buying used from trust-able shops. If you play games the average xbox game can be about 7500 yen, that is about $88. Try buying used games, there were shops in Akihabara that sold used games and even retro games.

Tour the sites. Try visiting the city every once in a while, its always good to get out and visit the sites. I would definitely visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, my class visited there and it was an eye opening experience for us all.

If you find a lost item on the ground leave it there. People tend to leave items in nooks close to the place they were dropped or left so that the person who lost it can find it.

Be respectful, always say "Sumimasen"(Pardon/Excuse me) whenever you bump into someone or need help. Be kind and respectful, a lot of Japanese people are xenophobic in some manner.

And the most important: Know and obey the laws.

learned all this from my japanese teacher who is a native when we stayed in Japan for 2 weeks as an activity for our school class.

My sister-in-law was stationed there and her kids would have been in school (though I don't know what age they were at the time). I will ask her about that and PM you a reply (if this thread has since died).

Of course. Not a big one...

It's either North Carolina (which I love, to be quite honest)
or Okinawa, Japan (I've never even been outside of the US before, not even to Canada...).

I just feel that now is a better time than any to experience another country. Another culture.

As an aside, beware cost of living and make sure that whatever pay bump you get offsets the higher standard of living there.

Are you talking about the phonetic alphabet or kanji? The phonetic alphabet it easy, Kanji is a pain in the rear.
