He who wishes for peace must first prepare for war.

No not really.

The weird scifi-steampunk-Naussica of the Valley of the Wind thing they got going doesn't have a ton of mainstream appeal.

Imagine what people were thinking when they saw the whole space, alien fighting, super soldier thing.

We'll see with time.

Halo in the wake of Reach was comparable to star wars. It had three games from which a complex and detailed Universe emerged with supporting assets from different forms of media. This phenomenon is very similar to what happened to Star Wars was when it was new.

There is at least an order of magnitude of difference between the two. They're only comparable in the sense they are both multimedia science fiction franchises. Show a series of pictures of Halo characters to a passerby on the street. At most they'll likely recognize the Chief. Show passerbys pictures of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Mario, Luigi, or Bowser, and most of them will be able to identify the characters. Mario is a cultural icon. Star Wars is a cultural icon. Halo is not. Halo is not really comparable to Star Wars.
