What exactly is an arena shooter? Clarification would be nice.
Think more Halo 2/3 and less Reach/CoD
Definition pl0x.
Beats me, I'm just telling you the impression I get from the rest of the Flood.
That's kinda my point. It seems like the Flood really doesn't know what it means. They just say that's what Halo is.

It's kind of debatable, that's why. Everyone has their own definition. I think of an arena shooter as a game where everyone starts on equal footing (no perks or custom classes)

Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

I do. It's what gave Halo CE, 2, and 3 their charm. Simple game play, a notable learning curve, and action packed maps that don't turn into -blam!- shows.

Nobody likes arena shooters anymore.

Arena shooters are dead.

Once everyone gets over the CoD mentality, arenas will more than likely make a return.

I call that once the new R6 comes out that will be the new thing (tacticals). That's if its good.

Dear tomorrow, Find some sensibility, Respond to emotion.
Dear Politician, Define sagacity,
All chances of survival are beginning to diminish.
Comedy is no excuse for our own blasphemies.
Mass media, Mass pessimism, Mass Denial.
My television tells me to panic, but I don't think I'll listen.
The apathetic force us to persevere, with their backwards priorities.

I have a feeling Destiny will be more story oriented, perhaps it won't even have a "competitive" multiplayer mode, just co-op.
This would make me so happy...

That is what I was thinking. I think Bungie would also do this because:

1. Too many "competitive" shooters on the market already.

2. I assume Bungie would want to take a break from pure shooter after almost 10 years of it. (Not including Marathon.)

An arena shooter is where everyone starts on the same grounding with the equal ability to pick up weapons and equipment and use them for a time. The idea is that everyone starts out on the same foot rather than classes and all that where you start out with an advantage or disadvantage.
There we are. Much obliged.

"Arena shooter" is a term that describes the early years of first-person shooters, where platformer and top-down shoot 'em up characteristics were prominent. If you add classes to the mix then the resulting FPS falls into another category; Reach is rightfully not an arena FPS due to this.

I challenge anyone to find a harder modern FPS than Tribes: Ascend.
Quake Live.

There's no doubt in my mind that the genre can resurface to popularity, it just requires a lot of good advertising to sway consumer mentality (right now military shooters are seen as hot stuff, whilst arena shooters are seen as old hat). Bungie aren't the people to do it though, as it's quite clear to me that Destiny is not an arena FPS. They've said they want to create a universe where players can spend more time in-game then what was possible with Halo. They want to produce a deeper, richer game world. Due to the abstract nature of an arena FPS it's inherently difficult, if not impossible to do that. It's just not a good match, and since arena shooters aren't even mainstream anymore it's a risky move. I think Destiny will be a sc-fi FPS/MMORPG hybrid if anything.
