What exactly is an arena shooter? Clarification would be nice."Arena shooter" is a term that describes the early years of first-person shooters, where platformer and top-down shoot 'em up characteristics were prominent. If you add classes to the mix then the resulting FPS falls into another category; Reach is rightfully not an arena FPS due to this.

I challenge anyone to find a harder modern FPS than Tribes: Ascend. Quake Live.
There's no doubt in my mind that the genre can resurface to popularity, it just requires a lot of good advertising to sway consumer mentality (right now military shooters are seen as hot stuff, whilst arena shooters are seen as old hat). Bungie aren't the people to do it though, as it's quite clear to me that Destiny is not an arena FPS. They've said they want to create a universe where players can spend more time in-game then what was possible with Halo. They want to produce a deeper, richer game world. Due to the abstract nature of an arena FPS it's inherently difficult, if not impossible to do that. It's just not a good match, and since arena shooters aren't even mainstream anymore it's a risky move. I think Destiny will be a sc-fi FPS/MMORPG hybrid if anything.
