So, after watching the boat scene as a child, I didn't really think much of it. Shortly after revisiting the movie at an older age, I began to really wonder what the heck it was about. It was a completely happy and bright movie, then all of a sudden, there's this weird and frightening scene in the middle of nowhere.

Does anyone know if there's a meaning behind it? Or is it just a scare?

Scene for reference

Quote from Confucius

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

Change of pace for the movie ?

I don't know. It just seems so out of place.

I think it's just a scare, but since it was made in the 60s, it seems like an acid trip or something.

blarg.

Maybe to symbolize/demonstrate the wackiness of Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory?

I don't know. It's kind of similar to the psychedelic colour scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey before the end.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

It's the dark part of the imagination.
