"It's them! The Government! They're in cahoots with them aliens! You believe me right?! Ya do right?!"

-Basckus

It's the question that's been dwelling in my mind for some time now. I came up with an answer for myself, but I wanted to know everybody else's.

So, what do you think? What made the past Halo games fun?

ready. go.

Replay value, in Halo 1/2/3/Reach every MP match played out at least a little bit differently. That's one of Halo 4's biggest issues, multiplayer is static, every match plays out the same exact way. Not to mention Halo 2/3/Reach have amazing Custom Games, and the mods and stuff for Custom Edition are really great as well. And the fact that previous Halos promoted exploration in the Campaign, allowing us to explore and escape levels if we tried really hard, none of this "return to battlefield" nonsense.

Everything is proceeding as I have forseen.

Sounds about right.

For me it was the base gameplay being smooth, well-paced and prone to truly epic moments or other hilarity.

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

Finely-tuned weapon (and vehicle) sandbox played off against a fantastic AI network in incredible environments to amazing music, all tied together with an epic story.

Sums it up pretty well, I'd also throw in all of the hilarious random stuff that would happen in Matchmaking in Halo 3.

The shadow on the wall.

Silent

Replay value, explorability, fun.

I for one played Halo 2 for years with no live, and just had fun exploring everything in the campaign. I found half of the skulls by myself, managed to jump around the maps by myself, and all around had an epic time.

Now it's all "Return to battlefield" every time I walk ten feet out of map. I remember in Halo 2 they WANTED us to explore, placing various things so far out of the normal map it was hilarious.

Custom games were immensely fun, and added a lot of replay value, and maps were so much better.

Halo 4 just doesn't have the right feel to it.

We were younger when we played them.

And most of the maps in Halo 1-3 were fantastic. I also think that the weapons on the map helped the flow of the game. And wtf happened to balanced gameplay? It seems like nobody can make a balanced game anymore.

General public wants class customization, so more and more games are giving it to them. It works in a lot of games that are class based, but it just doesn't work in Halo and I really wish they hadn't done it.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

The Button

Custom Games.

Like everyone else said, exploration. You could go just about anywhere in past Halo games, now you've got the 10 second return everywhere. Even though Reach had it we could still get passed it, H4 just ruins it. I remember playing Halo 2 for hours and not getting bored, I would glitch in the campaign or in custom games with a few friends.

The past games were just all around fun.

I actually recently went back and played the Halo 3 campaign with some friends trying to find ways out of the levels, overall I think we spent a hundred or so hours just jumping around and laughing like idiots. It was the most fun I've had in a video game in years, no exaggeration.
