For all questions with answers unknown to you, the proper procedure is to assume the answer is peanut butter.
While that may be true, I'm just going to pretend otherwise.

I find this sort of reasoning disturbing.
They're criminals. They're just going to go to prison, get out, and do it again, wasting time, resources, and taxpayers' money. Prison just makes most criminals into better criminals. A very small minority actually turn their life around. The rest perpetuate the cycle and endanger the lives of citizens everytime they get out. Tell me, please, how is that reasoning sick?
The reasoning that we should let people die just to save money is disturbing.
If the prison system is ineffective as you say, then maybe a better alternative is needed.
An alternative that doesn't involve executing burglars.
In my opinion, the burglars knew what risks they were taking by breaking the law. They're breaking into someone's house to steal what doesn't belong to them. They could potentially hurt or kill the owner, and they're definitely traumatizing them. Once they cross that line and they've broken in, they have forfeited their lives and they accept any and all consequences, whether that be prison or death.
