How 'bout this?:
The final missions of Halo 3 involve Master Chief getting inside the Ark to stop Truth from activating it (hence the trailer). The Covenant fleet is focusing on keeping control of Earth and the Ark. Throughout the game the Arbiter and his allies focus on gathering together and destroying the remaining Covenant fleet, while the Humans focus on reclaiming their planet from the control of the Covenant. Near the end the Arbiter and his forces are engaged in an intense battle with the Covenant fleet over the Ark while the Humans below fight guerilla-like land battles with the Covenant ground forces that surround the Ark.
As Master Chief fights his way towards the Ark's control room, the war outside becomes fiercer and fiercer, with the Covenant having the upper hand and making the human's/Arbiter's chances seem hopeless. After killing whoever tried to activate the Ark, Master Chief discovers that he is too late to stop the activation process and has to find another way to stop the Ark (like some mechanical maneuver similar to how the Pillar of Autumn was destroyed in Halo: CE). In the end however, Master Chief has to sacrifice himself to complete the maneuver. Laying down his life to save all of those he cares about, Master Chief's sacrfice results in the destruction of the Ark, the resulting explosion destroying a majority of the Covenant's ships that were surrounding it to protect it.
Witnessing Master Chief's sacrifice, and seeing their chance to attack, the Humans and the Arbiter's fleet simultaneously attack the remaining Covenant forces and emerge victorious. Afterwards, the crater from the Ark is made into a monument to honor John: a single human man who, laying down his life to save the lives of countless others, made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we may have a chance...
...don't know if that's the glorious ending some of you want/asked for, but it sounds like a pretty cool way for Master Chief to die: a hero
