Well, thought I'd post this here.

My team and I plan on using the Halo engine (on the Xbox, but I'll explain why I'm posting here in few sentances) to create a new first person shooter. By replacing each of the original Halo campaign and multiplayer maps with new custom ones, we can efficiently use the Halo game engine to create our own Xbox game. So why do I post this in the Maw? Well, in order to make custom maps, we need to use Halo CE and the HEK (allong with a few conversion tools, in case you have heard about the controversy of using them, we have full rights to use the tools) allong with some PC/Xbox modding tools (HMT, HHT) to tweak the converted maps. Also, I'm posting here because the maw is usually filled with people more interested in joining projects like this.

Is that legal to use the engine? or do you need their permission?

...sounds like a pretty big task you've got ahead of you. I've heard of this sort of thing attempted...but none have been successful, to be honest. I wish the best of luck, nevertheless.

I would just make sure you have lots of enthusiasm, and enthusiasm to stay, cause this will be more frustrating than it may seem.

Finally...how exactly is a game made using the H1PC engine run on the Xbox? I mean, the Box is simply a computer stripped down for gaming, but still, there's codecs, OS, and all this other stuff you've gotta work through if you're gonna get a game to run on the Xbox.

You need bungie's permission if you plan on selling / redistributing the XBE. Everything else is custom made and can be sold for cash, but we don't plan to. We only plan on selling the cases, instruction manuals and blank DVD-RWs. The maps and binks (videos) will be available for free on certain sites and the xbe you would have to get on your own.
We do plan on making negotiations with bungie when we are done to see if we can create real Xbox DVDs and redistribute the XBE, but not until we are done.

In response to me15ter:
We're using Halo for the Xbox, but just replacing the maps with the converted Halo CE maps made with the HEK. It has been done and we have plenty of converted maps that play perfectly on the Xbox.
Also, it will only play on modded Xbox systems unless we are taught the secret to making legit Xbox games during negotiations with bungie. This has been done with another game and the creators gave them full permission to sell it as a new game.
