Could he be an assimilated forruner? thus he's been left to roam rather than locked up as the forunner ddint want to lock up one fo thier own? he seems preeety smart for a flood, so i guess he might be an assimilated forrunner?

Of course he's smart. He has the knowledge of countless victims(Forerunner included, most likely)assimilated in him. I'm not sure what you mean by "lock up one of their own", but the Gravemind was contained. You can see what looks like a retaining array just before you see him the first time. But then why can't he simply teleport him away like he did with the MC and Arbiter before? I'm guessing he used 2401 Penitent Tangent when he nabbed him.

I think its often thought that he might be an infected Forerunner. A fallen angel sort of deal, hence he becomes this demonic hellish monster.

brilliant theory - Perhaps he wasnt infected by the flood - but by something greater; for he seems to have some kind of control over the flood

We know that the halo's have been activated before - but how did the flood exist?

Part of him is most likely forunner. He is made up of the bodies of the floods enemies and fallen combat forms. Chances are that there is at least one forunner body in him.

Looks like 100,000 years isn't enough to starve then.

so to be clear - the halos dont wipe out the flood? We are never actually told whether the halos wipe out all life but the flood, or all life alltogether

The flood found on installation 04 were from the research part of halo, they were the only ones left. so I'm guessing that there were also a research part of delta halo. So really Gravemind could've been an experiment by the forunner to try and communicate with them, by giving him intelligence?

nice theory - but in his backwards poem; gravemind talks about his state as if it is his punishment for some form of sin; i dont think this ties in with this

so..could it be that Grave mind may have been a "bad" forunner, thus sent to halo to be assimilated by the flood?

technically.... we lead the covenant to halo. It was only after the covenant followed the pillar of autumn that they found halo; albeit, they knew of its existance. What we need to ask is - were the forerunner living on halo?

That, would be quite a shock, to look over a ridge and see ruins of a Forerunner city in the valley.

It seems the Forerunner did use Halo besides as a research facility(strange enough, we never saw basic things like..quarters, galleys, and the like). From the Delta Halo ruins, it seems at some point it was also a worshipping grounds and the remains of a 100,000 years' war still unfinished and simply contained.

Even more strange, is Gravemind seems to have characteristics of a machine. Perhaps his core is a automaton, embedded within a great mass of tissue??

no, we ARE told what they do. Over and over by 343GS. They wipe out all sentient lifeforms so that the flood have nothing to eat.

And they have been set off once before. GS is going through the success rate of the installations, and says like 98 million simulated, 1 Actual.

No one knows why they didn't actually remove all the flood though...

well they might've been, but it may have originally been prisons for exiles of the forunner civilisations, then refitted to hold the flood and fitted with weaponry?

In addition, 343 Guilty Spark in Halo mentioned something about his "mass sterizilation protocols". What could that be? He also said that samples were kept after the last outbreak-kept by whom?

this is what i was wondering Research aye? but surely the forunner knew that they would have to activate the halos, and they did but who would do the research for them?

plus + why would they want to preserve the flood if they knew of the threat that it posed? Surely the forerunner must have been at war; and like the covenant, may have been thinking of using the flood as a weapon

FOR ALL we know... this whole covenant vs human thing could be a tiny-scale war; there could be something much more menacing; and large going on in the universe. Our assumption that halo 3 will only involve humans, the flood, the sentinels and the forerunner is unfounded
