One of the worst aspects of Halo 2 MM involved the overwhelming obsession over players' ranks. Many felt compelled to achieve these high levels by any means necessary just for the sake of bragging rights. As we all know this led to many frustrating online experiences mainly due to the various forms of cheating that came into existence.

Bungie has stated on numerous ocassions that the ranking system was specifically designed to match up players of equal skill within a MM game. Unfortunately, the community seemd to take it a step furthur placing a great deal of importance on the number that appeared next to one's gamertag. What resulted for many were moments of extreme dissappointment upon losing that rank that they supposedly worked so hard to achieve. IMV this took a significant amount of fun out of the MM experience.

What I'm proposing here is a revamped ranking system similar to that of Battlefield 2. What I'm referring to basically is once a player achieves that next level their rank should only go down if they quit out of a certain number of games. Losing matches would have no impact on your ranks other than the fact that it would take you a bit longer to reach that next level.

To make this system worth everyone's while I also propose extending the ranks from 50 to 100 and increasing the requirements for achieving these ranks such as more victories in accordance to the playlist participation as well as aquiring a certain number and/or types of medals. I believe that a system along these lines would be extremely beneficial to the community and make MM function in the way that Bungie intended it to all along. What do you guys think?

Quae caret ora cruore nostro?
P.S. I love you.

Just stoping you going down would not stop people cheating to go up.

The MM should have 2 versions to each playlist-Unranked and Ranked.

Bungie's continued efforts to combat cheaters along with the 360's online features should eleviate the problem siginificantly. Plus not having to worry about losing your rank as you're getting thwarted 50-1 by a modder takes a lot of the sting out of what would be an extremely frustrating experience. That's what I'm hoping for.

I don't think that's the greatest.... what if you play in a party with people a lot better than you, and get to a level much higher than you would be at on your own. If you can't level down, you're stuck in a high level getting owned and losing every game with no way out.... and that's no fun.

Here is my idea, I think people should be ranked for how good THEY did, not the whole team. For example, if there is going to be Team Snipers in Halo 3, and your the best player in the game , but your team lost horribly, your rank would go up for how good you did.
Also, if there will be bigger team battles, if you don't do anything at all, but your team wins 3-0 your rank should not change.
Just my idea folks! You should be ranked on your personal skill, not of the whole team, win or loose.

So are you implying that you're a deleveler? Joining a party of higher levels is your choice. The chances of your teammates being able compensate for your shortcomings on a consistent basis against high level comp are slim. So I wouldn't worry too much about reaching that undesired level. And if you do find yourself getting owned repeatedly then that's something you need to deal with.So instead of taking the easy way out you'll be required to do what it takes to improve your skills by way of training playlists and/or other reliable methods.

I like to knit sweaters.....and by knit I mean PUNCH....and by sweaters I mean babies.

Macgyver can build an airplane out of gum and paper clips, but Evil One can kill him and take it.

I think you shouldn't be able to see you rank. Then there would be no point to cheat, glitch, bridge, etc.....You'd still get matched with players of equal skills but only bungie would know your skill number.

NO WAY ! Then you'd have people just out for themselves, And not trying to actually win. ie. Territories, You'd have the team trying to capture territories but the guy out for himself would be just rtying to spawn camp the other team or trying to rack up medals to benefit himself only. He would run pat a vacant territory to kill the guy up hte street instead

I like the idea of ranking someone on how good they did in the match. But the problem is what to rank them on? Because some matches require the WHOLE team to even do anything on. For instance territories. If you rank the person on how good they did, what would they be ranked on in territories? How much time they got. But they wont get much time if the whole team does not cooperate.

yo man, first of all the reason why moders are moders is cause they suck. i beat down moders on a regular basis so the only reason why some one would complain is cause they cant take it. and your ranking system isnt the best and it wont work. on any game there will be cheaters, even on mmorpg games like WoW, but to have it where the ranking system goes off of medals. thats just dumb. i am a player of all different skills, gernads and battle rifle/shot gun is my best. and not a one of those gives me medals. so what your saying is if we played each other and i kill you 25 times with that combo and you kill me 3 that you should go up because your 3 were from a beat down and a couple of stickes. seriously you sound like a kid that gets a high hit percentage and a lot of medals but lose all your games because you fire off 6 shots and are always the person with the flag. honestly.

Yea Rann kin, I know what you mean, I recently played modders on a Double Team with a friend, and they really piss me off, they were all like " Just accept youre going to lose f*tard" and then I beat one of them down, the only reason they win is because they mod, which means they suck.

But thats my idea, you have to find a good way to rank people this way, otherwise its just unfair.

yeah, i feel a good way is not like what other games have like you are 9,873/20,000 thats even worse cause this way it can only be one #1 and thats where the real cheaters come is cause you will be the only one with #1 and if you do that off a singular statistic then you are going to have a war on your hands. i feel that bungie's way of halo 2 was the best. it also shows a players real skill.

for example you are rank 39 legit, would you go play with your friends from school that are rank 13 or are you too afraid to lose your rank. in my game time i find that the people that dont caer about their rank are better. i have a friend that is helfire when it comes to this and many other fps games and he got a 36 legit and went in the next day and de-rank him self to 14. did he care? no. cause a week later he got to rank 38 no problem. the kids that get all offensive about their rank like moders are kids that seriously need to lighten up, its just a game. i could go right now and play team slayer till im -50 and the next day get 37. its like nothing to me. but some kids that are good will see that the ranks mean nothing cause i have seen an old 21 (which is back in the day before the ranks were reset and haveing a 16 was like having a legit 34 today) get slapped by a 14....but the highest rank that 14 ever got was i think 16. so you cant go off of singular stats or have the 1/20,000 rank system either. and i think that 100 is too high because you will have a race to get the first 100 and that will be moders heaven, 75 is good. and i segjust keeping that rank looks like keep the halo for 50, but just increase it like have a brute head for 60 and so on. that would eb a nice thing to see.

but yeah for those that its all about ranks are just here for the power...which they have non.

a few weeks ago (since i keep me guy in the mid 20's) i played a team slayer game and on the other team was some 32. he was mad that he lost and he thought i was a noob that got lucky, well he found out the hard way 6-25 was the final score and i did that with a sniper and br....he even got desperate and went for the sword and the noob combo(battle rifle and plasma pistol), but the final was up to 50 and well the last NBA finals game came on and i didnt want to miss it. not to mention i had jsut got a running riot at the 23 so yeah.

thats my idea, talk it over with what you think.

Deleveling or de-ranking is another major reason why I feel Bungie should consider altering the ranking system for Halo 3. It's not about whether or not one would care about how significant their rank is. I could care less about my rank as well. My main concern is having a fun experience every single time I participate in a MM game. So obviously having someone on either team deleveling for whatever reason pretty much takes all of the potential fun out of the match that's taking place. IMO if you give players one less thing to worry about (losing their levels for example) they should be able to have a more enjoyable experience playing Halo3 online.
