My desktop beauty will not start up. It happened yesterday, I was about to upload a stunt film onto Putfile when my computer just shut down. It didn't crash or come to a slowdown, it just abruptly turned off as if the power was cut off. (This was the second time it happened to me that day, but after the first time it shut down, I was able to boot it up again. Thinking it was simply some sort of bug in XP that caused it, I just continued doing what I was doing.)

I tried to boot it up again but nothing happened. My PC's hawt neon colors didn't glow like they usually do, and I checked the power lines and whatnot to see if the power cord was connected and everything was in place and such. But no matter what I cannot get my PC to start up. That's why I was unable to roam the Maw as I usually do yesterday.

I'm afraid this is an internal problem and I am not competent enough to spot the problem. Would somebody please assist me?

Sounds like a power supply failure.

Or, worse, it could be a motherboard failure.

If you can, borrow a power supply from another PC and put it in your computer. If it still doesn't turn on, then it's a motherboard failure and your PC is -blam!-.

Oh, also, make sure that *if applicable* all the RAM chips and video/sound cards are properly seated in their slots.

Do you have another PC?
You could also go get a cheap PSU just as a backup. Although if it's cheap it might not handle the hardware that you have in your PC.

Hm...depending on the age and the wear of your comptuer, it could be the WinXP Auto-shutdown feature that shuts the computer down when it gets too hot. It's a pretty common occurence with older computers or with uncleaned ones. Check to make sure your fans aren't clogged with dust, dirt or just simply blocked by being up against a wall or something. The OS automatically force-shutdowns computers when the system overheats to prevent things like the CPU from melting into sillicon.

Give it about a half hour or so, then check the ports for dust and dirt. Vacuum, take it apart and use an aircan, put it back together, then reboot and see if it helps. I would also check to see, like Orcface said, if its your PS that's acting haywire, as well as if you've OCed your processor, take it back down a few notches to prevent overheating, make sure your cooling/heatsinks is/are working properly, etc, etc.

If all else fails, should I use a leafblower?

(I thought it was the OS.)

Thanks for all the help, I'll try to get it back up.

^The probable cause.

My PC used to randomly shut down at times, so I opened it up and it was caked with dust. My videocard was full of dust, my heatsink was full of dust, everything was just dusty.

I vaccumed it out and it's fine now.

Or you know when you buy your comp? Did a cd come with it that says reinstalling software stuff? Put that in it should work though you have to reinstall everything, its worth it. If that doesent work then its something else.

I suppose you could pry open the DVD drive, put the disk in, and then pretend it's turned on.

  • 07.10.2006 9:43 AM PDT

Or you take a paper clip, shove it into the hole in the CD drive then it'll open then try it xD.

As in they didn't glow at all? If they didn't light up, then it's most likely a power-supply failure. It depends if the lights plug right into the power-supply or the motherboard.

I know you might have done these things, but just to make sure...

[*}Check switches that may be on the power-supply, or your surge-protector, to make sure none of those we're switched off accidentally.

* Check to see if any of your other components such as your monitor still recieve power. If nothing seems to turn on at all, then there's a problem with the power. Check the breaker box or whatever to see if that's the problem.

Overheating seems probable too. When mine did that, it just abruptly shut off, and the main case fan just started to spin really fast.

Hmmm, I'm willing to bet it is just your ps. I have had the problem before, and have known a few with the same issues.

Maybe running your mouth on x-fire finally caught up and bit your computer on the ass.....peace?

im afraid im gonna have to confiscate your testicles.

What are you, the Cyber police? lol.

Wow 3 posts in a row! Definant "Please dont triple post theres a self-explinantary edit button right there!"

WAIT A MINUTE how are you writing all this if your PC was down on the day before yesterday? Ok there are 2 ways,
1.You wrote all this before the day your so called "PC downage" came up and that you wrote your PC wouldnt turn on at all so how would you know that your PC wouldnt turn on at all if you wrote this before your PC shut down completely? I mean you couldnt write this when your computer is not working....
2. You wrote all this after your computer was fixed and had people assist you even though you didnt need help because your computer was up and running, so how did you write all this?

If you absolutely cannot find out whats wrong, then its time for some DESPERATE actions.

I would recommend going to a hardware store, buying the most powerful leafblower they have there, opening up your PC, and just blowing the hell out of the PC, then slowly piece back the PC with glue, and turn it on, this will always work.

Be warned, the PC might EXPLODE AFTER!

-----------------------------------

But seriously, maybe you had a blackout, and you have a backup power unit attached to your PC, this happens to my old PC, the backout would mess up the backup power unit, then you couldn't even turn on the PC without it shutting back down again.
