Subject: The Spartans (ALL of Them)

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

There is at least 4 distinct groups of Spartans mentioned in the Halo Storyline:

1.) Spartans from Ancient Greece
2.) Spartans Is (briefly mentioned as a successful group in The Flood)
3.) Spartan IIs (The Chief and his crew)
3.) Spartan IIIs (implied in The Fall of Reach)

About the Spartan Is... any one else think they'll be of any significance? They're most likely pretty old (it said they existed during the late 2400s)... Maybe some of them are still working for the UNSC as high-up officials. For some reason, I have a growing suspicion that CPO Mendez is actually a Spartan I, due to his repeated description of having black eyes, and being incredibly machine-like (after all, who would be more qualified to train Spartans than a Spartan himself?). Like I said, this is only a suspicion (did I spell that right?), since I'm aware that the "black eyes" and "machine-likeness" might only be just descriptions of a hard character, not a hint of any kind....

We all know about the Spartans of Greece and the Spartan IIs.

Spartan IIIs.... As we know, "the next batch of Spartans" were supposed to recieve training from CPO Mendez. And in First Strike, files called "SIII" and "CPOMZ" in Ackerson's secret databases, found by Dr. Halsey, hint at this as well. But does anyone else think that they are non-existant? The were presumeably started in 2525, when Mendez left to train them after the Spartan IIs graduated... The fact that it has been 27 years since then seems to me that they're dead. No mentioning of any active service, which is odd, considering the Spartan IIs were made public to boost morale (another batch of Spartans made public would boost morale even more...). The Spartan IIs were put into active duty 8 years after they were inaugurated into the program. Thats the reason why I think that 27 years is too long to train a group of Spartans. Their training may be complete, but like I said, why doesn't anyone know about it? They probably got wiped out by a Covenant orbital plasma bombardment....

This is more for the new people, but veterans might find it useful as well...

good point about the Spartan III's - there would have been at least some miniscule mention of them.

Also - the Files that doctor Hasley found in Ackersons database were 'doctered' by Cortana when she accessed the files to learn more about the MAsterchief ( john - 117), it says so in Halo: The Flood.

But, and this is just speculation; Ackerson appears to know alot more than he leads on about.

True, but I want to point out that the Spartan IIIs are probably not Ackerson's. The Spartan program is Ackerson's competition, and the Spartan Program would include all of them. So why would Spartans be in competition with Spartans from basically the same program? I think his "weapon" is something else...

And I'm going to point out that I don't really believe the stuff about SIII and CPOMZ meaning Spartan III and CPO Mendez... I think that SIII probably means Section III of ONI, and that CPOMZ probably is talking about some sort of military zone (which, in the military, is abreviated by MZ... but the resemblence of CPO Mendez to CPOMZ is quite strong...). I think this way because of the reason that Cortana doctored those files, like you said, and she also stole Spartan II files from Halsey and basically framed Ackerson for it (via a "ghost" backtracer software program thingy for covering up her hacking).

I haven't read the books in about 5-6 months, so you may count this as void if you like. From what I recall about Ackerson, he seemed quite jealous of Dr. Hasely and the Spartan II's. One possible explanation for this Spartan III situation, is that the Spartan III's would be a complete ego trip for Ackerson. It would be a way of saying to Dr. Hasely... "You made the Spartan program, but I perfected it!"

Also, if you take the assumption that this is the Spartan III progam, and I understand that you, Shai Hulud, are trying to come up with an alternative explanation, then I would also assume that the Spartan III's would be apart of ONI... very secretive. Unlike the the media freindly Spartan II's, the Spartan III's would be more of a CIA/KGB type of group. The Spartan III's would be just as strong, smart, and capable as the Spartan II's; except, they would be kept on the down low. Spartan III's would be more suitable for missions such as, getting behind enemy lines "undetected" to studying the Covenant Prophets or Brutes. After completing their mission, they would then leave "undetected." You know, "undetected" like not setting a nuke in a sewer tunnel to destroy a city, or not destroying a whole armada of the Covenant battle fleet headed to Earth.

Yeah, I've considered the confidentiality of the possible Spartan IIIs... but I thought that it would make more sense if they were made public, since it'd be a morale boost (which is very much needed, since even mighty Reach fell...).

But, I'll point something out: The Covenant has to have someone on the inside for them to know so much about the Spartan IIs. In The Flood, its stated that they know about the Spartans having training since a very young age, and that they are augmented and what-not (everything that happened before they were put into their first mission (to capture Colonel Watts) is supposed to be utterly secret, since Cortana had to infiltrate Dr. Halsey's secret files to learn about that particular part of their past (everything before the first mission, as well as specifics on the augmentation project)). Also, in The Flood, there are several statements made by the Covenant that say, "our sources." Methinks someone is a traitor.... And with all the controversy regarding the topic, I think Ackerson is that traitor. Think about it:

Ackerson did not want to be on the front lines, whereas any self-loving human wouldn't be that persistant to stay off the lines when the survival of the entire race is at stake... Also, when Ackerson got off the front lines, he moved into politics and secretive ONI ops, which doesn't really do much for the war (I'm not necessarily saying ONI doesn't do much for the war, but its mainly the UNSC that is doing the fighting, and one more additional person to ONI, a person who is said to be talented at fighting the Covenant (ship-based, said in TFoR), would actually hurt the war effort a little, in my oppinion). Also, there is the whole thing about the discovered coordinates that don't point to any human-occupied space, which were found in Ackerson's secret databanks. Furthermore, traitors are not uncommon. There were two in The Flood. Finally, Ackerson wanted to cover up what was going on at Reach after it fell. He objected to Lt. Wagner going back to Reach to survey the aftermath, and pointed out, rather overinsistantly and sadistically, that everything there was "dead, dead, dead."
