ITs possible you just have to make REALLY big maps... like battlefield 2 big. The reason CS:S doesnt work is because they put 64 people in a tiny map and people just sprint to the bottle necks and get lucky with headshots until one team is the luckier. For Large scale battle to work.... you can't have shields, it has to be very quick deaths, like Marines vs. Some new covie more similiar to a Marine. The reason their has to be quicker deaths is so that one person can take on 3 or 4 by just being a good shot, getting 4 head shots = 4 deaths. Without this, these 3 or 4 people would all fire once, maybe twice before hes dead, technically only one should have to fire once to kill him in my situation, but you can actually take cover and pin an enemy down... because if they pop up they are dead.... they cant run like 20 ft closer to more cover and live through your fire.
Also if Bungie was to do large scale battles they should actually make it worth it, something new. Complete destructibility from all things to all buildings, ground and basically everything. Imagine standing on the outskirts of a city and just seeing one of the buildings collaps when a damaged pelican crashes into the side. Its possible to pull off with dedicated servers and maybe a much better netcode with no lag.... look at BF 2 and Joint Ops Escalation (150 Players)... both games have no lag for me ever.
I think Bungie could pull it off, but I dont think they would want to take the Halo games in that direction (right now, I think the outcry for a really good no holds bar FPS with massive amounts of players is just to much for Bungie to ignore after Halo 3, I feel they could do some really cool things with it, if only they would.)
