The pistol debate has been raging since Halo 2 came out. I personally prefer the new pistol as its a lot more realistic than the old one. However I also liked the original pistols smart-link scope even if it was a little unrealistic in its firing range. Real world pistols have an effective range of about 150 meters, but the H1 pistol was more like a rifle so Bungie toned it down to be more life like. Having said that this is a game after all and focusing to much on realism can ruin things.
So for H3 I would like to see a blending of the two pistol types. I would keep the range, power and rate of fire of H2's pistol but also bring back the zoom capability from the original pistol. Also now that the pistols damage rating is lower it should probably fire smaller calibre ammunition like 5.7mm armour piercing rounds instead of the large 12.7mm semi-armour piercing rounds the old pistol fired. This would allow the magazine to hold more ammunition. Finally their is only one stealth weapon in H2 (the sword), so I would upgrade the pistol with an attachable suppressor. This would give players more reason to carry it as a secondary weapon. Silenced shots would give no incoming fire damage indicator to the enemy and show no muzzle flash from the firer. The downside would be that a suppressed pistol can only be used one handed (no dual wielding).
Here is a picture of what I have in mind. In the pic I have taken the style and shape of the H2 pistol but given it the longer magazine of the original pistol. Also I have repositioned the smart-link camera scope underneath the weapon similar to modern day tactical pistols and so the weapon can have back-up iron sights. Additionally in H2 I noticed there is no cocking slide animation when the pistol is drawn or when the weapon runs dry. So for H3 it would be cool to see these animations.
