The AO rating is only tagged onto games with [insert completely innocent, yet banned, word whose first 3 letters consist of the name of the reproductive process used by humans among other animals and ending with the letters 'ual'] content so Halo 3 need not worry (Condemned was intense with gore and dismemberment and it held the M rating).
On a side note: the AO rating is terrible because it doesn't allow people under the age of 18 purchase the game. This restricts much of the gaming community and is far stricter than the standard for many FPS', the M rating, which allows the customer to be a whole year younger at 17 years of age... a signifigant gap there.
The ESRB is unconstitutionally enforced anyway, don't get me started.
