At the end of Halo 2, Guilty Spark says "My creators along with all other sentient life were destroyed." He is saying the forerunners were destroyed, and he says this in the presence of Miranda and Sgt. Johnson. If humans were forerunners he would recognize Miranda and Johnson as forerunners and would realize that some forerunners were still alive. And he wouldn't say the forerunners had been destroyed. This is big evidence that humans are not forerunners.
This kid obviously doesn't know about evolution. All right, let me give all of you who think the same way as this nut a little mini lesson:
The Halo installations didn't kill all life, they killed all SENTIENT life. Basically that means that it killed all life with highly evolved cerebral functions (multi-cellular organisms that evolved and developed brains for reacting to their environment). This is what 343 Guilty Spark referred to in Halo:CE as "any lifeform with sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood..."
This means that everything that was big enough to be infected by the Flood was wiped out.
However, there are things called microscopic lifeforms that would survive, unicellular (one cell) organisms that would be too small to feed the Flood. These unicellular organisms grew and evolved until they became large groups of several cells of the same organism. These multicellular organisms then eventually grew and evolved more until they became small plant and animal lifeforms. These lifeforms would continue to grow and evolve until they became much larger lifeforms made of millions of cells (like humans and other animals).
Therefore, it is safe to say that although we are not the original Forerunner, we were descended from them from over hundreds of thousands of years of evolution from their genetic material.
To end the lesson: no, the humans are not Forerunners, but we are their descendants. Think of it as the difference between dinosaurs and birds: birds aren't dinosaurs, but they are descendants of dinosaurs.
So yes moeron21, the humans aren't Forerunners, but 343 Guilty Spark recognizes us as their descendants. If you need proof that he does, just play the last level in Halo:CE and listen to what he says after he stops Cortana's destruct program and proceeds to download information from the Pillar of Autumn's compter system: "Finally we have a record of our lost time from each other. Human History, is it? Fascinating!" GS was reading all the information on human history stored inside the Pillar of Autumn and referred to it as a "record of our lost time". (The period of time from when the Forerunners were destroyed and were no longer in contact with the Monitors to the moment that Master Chief and the Pillar of Autumn came to Halo Installation 4; so yeah...all of human history...)
That's all well and good, but the Forerunners weren't single-celled. So thus, how did their geneological line survive to evolve into us?
I can see how you would be confused, I didn't explain it completely (so many forums, so many idiots to shut up, so little time...): I didn't say that the Forerunners were single-celled, I simply said that humans would have evolved from cells containing their genetic material. Perhaps that was even the purpose of the "Ark": to store and protect the Forerunner cells from the Flood and use them to repopulate Earth once the Flood had subsided (just like the Biblical story...)
